HARBOR FREIGHT TEARDROP

Introduction

The popular Harbor Freight 4x8ft utility trailer is a surprisingly close match for the original 'Trailer for Two' trailer chassis (see comparison below) and this design is essentially the 'Trailer for Two' mounted on the Harbor Freight trailer. Two modifications to the trailer are shown:

• the axle is relocated 4" to the rear of its original position;
• the wheels/tires are replaced with 205/74R14 which are a closer match to the 1947 originals.

Please note that this design has been prepared based on the dimensions and photos included in the Harbor Freight web site, but an actual trailer has not been measured. Consequently if you want to use this design, you must satisfy yourself that the assumed trailer dimensions are correct. If anyone can provide me with the exact measurements of the parts of one of these trailers, please contact me and any design errors will be corrected.

The rest of the trailer design is based closely on the 'Trailer for Two' plans that appeared in Mechanix Illustrated in September 1947 with the following changes:

• the internal structure of the kitchen and the overhead locker in the cabin have been simplified;
• the side skin has been changed from 1/4" plywood plus 1/4" Masonite to just 1/2" plywood;
• the top skin has been changed from 1/4" Masonite to 1/8" plywood;
• many of the old fittings in the original design have been left out.
