Hoosier Winter Camping Jan 09

Postby Jst83 » Fri Oct 17, 2008 10:56 pm

Thought we should get a thread started for the annual winter Shiveree.
Planning on the 17th of January for those brave enough or silly enough to go out in the cold. Last year it was a whole -1 when we got up Sunday Morning but it was toasty warm in the teardrop.
Makes it kind of hard to cook breakfast though
Had to use my cooler to keep my drinks from freezing.
Place is still not set ,no real problem finding a site last year we had the campground to ourselves.
I'm getting a feel for those interested and come up with a central place between them.

So far we have about 7 planning on attending I think. Up from the 4 last year

Sounds like fun.
Just wondering where you hold your shiveree (campground). I live to far away to attend. Maybe we should do something like that here. Jim G

Most state parks allow winter camping, The modern bathrooms are closed but the pits are open. Most smaller private and or KOA are closed for the winter, at least in these parts. I've already started looking around and calling a few places.
The state parks don't even take reservations early you pay when you get there and it's on;y $11 last year I think

It is fun and something to brag about.

Good luck and remeber it only takes 2 to make a gathering

Old whats her name and I dragged out the atlas this morning.
We noted that Mounds State park is fairly centrally located for the Indy crowd and the folks in Marion. We have an almost straight shot but a bit farther. With weather being an unknown factor No one wants to run the length of the state to attend and with gas being what it is still ,I would like for everyone to have a central location. Has any one been to Mounds and is it what we are looking for ? Just a thought! Vickie and I haven't missed one yet and don't want to.

Thanks for getting the planning started on this. I wanted to attend last year, but ran into some unexpected conflicts. I have it on my calendar and will try to make the trip if the roads are safe. St. Louis is a fur piece, but with careful (and safe) hypermiling, I should be able to get there without using too much gasoline.

My wife, Denice, will probably not attend. She loves the cold in winter like I love the heat in summer.

All the best...

You're welcome, Glad to hear you're gonna try and make it.
I'm the same way about the roads if they're nasty no one needs to try I'd rather see people in the good weather than risk something happening in the bad. Last year we were lucky roads were good here just a little cold

My wife is the same way, thinks I'm crazy and say's you boys have fun.
But she did show a little interest So Vicki might not be the only female there.
Of course she said she could always spend the day in the camper watching movies and reading. So you may never see her

Thank You madjack, kinda hard to hold a winter campout down south though.
You're welcome to come up and join us.

Amy says she might go but I'm still betting she won't brave the cold

I'll keep an eye on the thread. I might brave the cold this year, Of coarse If it snows I'll have to go to work so it will be a last minute decision either way!

freezing and drink it for warmth
5. Consume alcoholic drinks for warmth
