Couldn't do it in the winter as there is no roads other than one gravel lane and it would have to be one central fire, pretty much as big as we want.
I forget how many acres they own but it runs from one country block to the other. If you're familiar with country blocks that's a lot.
Inside the yellow is there's. Blue is water

If anyone is interested I'll ask

How did we go from a 12 volt only - no 110 power...to a primitive "no showers - pit toilets only" outing?????

Let me recap

Scott wrote:I'd be all for a no power one I haven't used my lantern in a while.
But I'd have to second the need for modern restrooms. There's a reason I wasn't born in the old west Laughing

But I'd be up for anything that's decided upon Thumbs Up

Bob wrote:Oh for God's sakes kick Kurt out of the shower tent and you can borrow my porta potty too.

Maybe this won't be such a good idea with all you girl scouts Thinking

Bob wrote:If we only had an understanding landowner with a big woods we
could lash up a fanny rest for a hand dug slit trench latrine and saw off a conveniently located small branch for a toilet paper holder.
Don't forget a 3 lb empty coffee can to cover the tp if it rains. Bring a big pan to warm up the "bath" water and a washcloth and a bar of soap ( Lava if you are a real man) and your towel. Now you are ready to scrub the stinkey parts and the rest can wait.

I think that's about were it turned

Now I'm not a finger pointer so I'll play nice.

At the place I was talking about we'd only be able to camp in the lower right hand corner not near the lake.

But once again I like the idea of restrooms with running water.

Actually I may have to take the blame for that with my answer to Kurt's question about what is a "primitive" site and the need to bring buckets and shovels.

Scott.. I think the level of interest would have something to do with when you planned it. Cooler weather rather than hot would be better. One central fire would be no problem, in fact it would make it more fun.

I must admit though, while I can live without a shower for a day or two, I do favor flush toilets. :worship:

If we do a powerless gathering it will be in the fall I imagine
And I'm for sure in favor of flush toilets also

As it stands nothing is set

I finally got to the bottom of your question. The idiot that started this thread also mentioned water jugs and porta potties.

It was my fault

very first #1 original post on this thread REPOSTED

Jeff ( Nitrous junkie) and I were yakin on the land line last week
and we stumbled over the topic of a no power gathering. Yep
wood fired coffee pots and wood fired microwaves ( they used
to call them dutch ovens ) . The value of 12 volt battery backup
systems would come to the forefront. A few brave hearth souls
would have to stock up on "D" batterys for the flash lights
and grab a couple water jugs and your porta potty and
experience primative camping. I mentioned in the conversation
with Jeff that I know of a campground need Veedersburg
that has extremely low over night rates ( 7.00 or was last year).
I could probably wrangle a group rate but this idea could be
carried out at any good mom and pop campground with a
primative section. If tomorrow was the day after a major
natural event and you couldn't plug in ,would you like to
have previous experience at minimalistic camping
in your rig ???

OK That settles it it's all Bob's fault!

Actually when Cindi & I first started camping, when we were young (yes we really were young once), we started backpacking in the Adirondacks. When you have to carry everything in, and out, it redefines "minimalist". Not only no water, no porta potty, and no electricity, it also means no two burner propane stoves, no ice chest, no dutch ovens, well you get the idea. Now we bring everything but the kitchen sink and think we're primitive camping because we don't have 110. We've turned into Wuses. :o Now it's an effort to walk to the can. I can't imagine hauling all the stuff I would need on my back. That DO really gets heavy after the first 10 feet.

Campground Update:

I just got back from looking at the Mississinewa Lake campgrounds (Miami S.R.A.).
There are two camping areas (electric) that are included in the Miami SRA.

The most promising area is near sites #378-#368 loop and aslo the #355-#367 loop. Within these two "loops" there are 32 sites that could be a great place for a gathering. There is a nice clear area for the "Pot Luck" dinner, plenty of trees for the Movie screen, and they are all close to the Shower House and to each other
There are several places to put in Kayaks or Canoes if needed.

I also checked out the other "S.R.A.'s" at the lake but found that they were mostly boat launch areas with no camping.

Mississinewa is a fairly big area and would be a good one for one of the "North" locationGatherings
Google Map

(Ya know, This retirement thing is getting to be fun) :o

Kurt,

As I remember Missessinewa had a covered but open air pavilion that they used during the re-enactment weekend for a potluck dinner for all campers. Is that still there? I wonder if we could use it on a different weekend. From the map it looks like they have really expanded the campground from when I was there last. I think the original campground was only sites 112-187 where the ampitheater is now and some of those sites are now full hook-up.

Another consideration would be Chain of Lakes for a fair weather location. It would be great for anyone wanting to canoe and/or fish.

You have me beat 88 for me.

Kurt those sites look pretty nice from the air view I know which site I want

I think I'll try and check out Summit this weekend, It has the campgrounds on a peninsula like at Salamonie and one section looks nicely wooded from the aerial view
