Canoe areas in Northern WI?

Postby WarPony » Tue May 22, 2012 6:30 pm

Well, our vacation this August will be taking us up to Wisconsin. Last year, we went to the Boundary Waters in MN and we LOVED it up there!! Are there any places that you guys have camped at near the Northern end or the U.P. of Michigan that are good for canoeing? Now, I don't expect it to be BFE like Boundary Waters is but would like some good scenery and not alot of people........ too much to ask (people wise)? We've never been to Wisco before....

My understanding is that the Sylvan (sp) area is comparable to the Boundary waters area. Or you can take the ferry out to Isle Royale which is truly fantastic. If you paddle Superior wear a dry suit or very good wet suit, It can kill you. We hit a storm at the north end of the island and water temperature middle of July can be in the 30's to low 40's.

Whats the plan of attack Jeff? Do you camp in your tear in a campground then go day tripping in the canoe? Or are you looking at a canoe camp trip?

My recommendation would be Voyageurs National Park for either. Let me know what you're looking for and there are other possibilities like the St Croix & Namakan Rivers, the Minoqua area, or even Madeline Island in the Apostle Islands.

A friend of mine at work camps/kyaks up by Bayfield, Wisconsin. They stay at a place called Little Sandbay camp" but you need to reserve.

We've been looking at the N. Fork of the Flambeau River, it seems like a pretty good river for fishing and camping. It also seems to have good water flow in the Summer, too.

Has anyone been up to the Chippewa Flowage area or the Turtle Flambeau floats? I'm REALLY looking for some good fishing (pike, walleye, muskie) as well as good tent camping. Last year in the Boundary Waters, I missed the same 30" Pike TWICE!!!!!!!!!!! I've got an edge to grind with ANY fish from the Nort!! Yeah, I said Nort...........
