This post only concerns anyone who has booked "early" for the CRA (to hold your site).

What I mean is this: If, for example, you booked your site prior to your actual arrival date (to hold your site) and intended to change the reservation later then there is something you should know about the reservation policy.

In the reservation rules it says "Partial cancellations are not allowed. The entire reservation must be cancelled."

This means that in order to revise your reservation to eliminate the "early days" you must call the DNR reservations number and go through the procedure for the change. 866-622-6746

The original reservation must be cancelled and then the "corrected" reservation can be done. There is cost of $10 to do this.

According to the DNR reservations person, there is no "waiting period" to make the corrected reservation so it can be done immediately for a fee of $10 (cancellation fee)

Normal reservations can be done "on-line" but the change, for better security, should be done over the phone.

This post only concerns anyone who has booked "early" for the CRA (to hold your site).

Kurt,

We, as teardroppers wouldn't do something like that, would we?

That would be really rude and could easily cause some other camper to not be able to get a site for their special trip.

Rob, who knows but with so many "early" bookings showing I thought that if it has been it should be known what needs to be happen.

Just curious. What's to stop the general public from booking spots during the event? I'd heard trying to get spots in State parks and National forests is tough. That once the online booking opens all the spaces can be gone for a given day within a minute. Is the campground actually reserved for CRA the 23-26th? Or are we competing with the general public for spots during the event?

The "public" will be there, Stacie. We had a track team and some other group of people there in 2013..

Ugh. So by the looks of it those of us who have registered for CRA but are not booking spaces well ahead (and apparently paying the $10 change fee) may not have any space to choose from by the 23rd? Does this mean if we want a spot for sure we need to register ahead and do this convoluted call in cancelation and re-reserve the event dates? I hope I'm understanding this wrong otherwise I doubt I'll be there. :(

Stacie, most people do reserve 6 months before the start date and they do get a sport. Those who wait until closer to the actual date of the CRA are the ones who may not be able to get a campsite.

Thanks for the insight Verna. But it makes me wonder why did I pay my registration fee ahead? I thought if you register you would be guaranteed a campsite. I guess I made a wrong assumption. If guaranteeing a spot meant having to book days in advance of the start date that would have been nice to know for budgeting purposes. And if this book ahead and cancel later tactic is how things are done then it certainly doesn't make a newcomer feel welcome because if you aren't in that loop you have no way of knowing this is how it's done. Again. Ugh.

Stacie,

There is no need to book farther out than 6 months.

Making your reservations as soon as you are able allows you a better choice of spots, if that matters.
Waiting until a few weeks before the event is not wise as there are other non teardrop campers who are also making summer plans.
As it is a public park, no group can simly reserve all the spots and "keep everyone else out".
Kurt and Dan have always urged everyone to make reservations as early as possible to avoid potential issues.

As with any vacation plans, reserving the spot you want as early as is possible is always wise, but we have never had an issue with a lack of available spots with exception to the people who wait to decide at the last minute to come, and then discover, as they would with any popular campground, that those who planned ahead by a couple months have already reserved what was available.

Kurt,

It was not my aim to fault you, I was simply amazed to hear that some in our group would resort to such practices.

Thanks Rob.

(edited to add I mistakenly confused the booked and available colors on the map in my comment below. 17 spots are currently reserved, the other 180+ are available.) Apologies for creating a misimpression.

But by the looks of it I just don't know. Today for instance. It's not even noon yet and 6 months from today there are only 17 spots available in the campground of 180+ sites. I'd already planned to sit up till midnight to book as early as possible on the 23rd. But if more people book ahead by going early I doubt there will be any sites left even by midnight for our event. Or if another group is hosting an overlapping event? Sorry to be so vocal about this but I'm feeling completely disappointed at the moment. Was really looking forward to attending and didn't realize the process could be so stressful.

This is turning into a fiasco.
Booking 2 weeks and then canceling a week and a half is outright wrong !

Stacie,

I may be dense, and therefore missing something...but when I look at the campground map, I see only 18 spots reserved, 6 months out.
All the rest of the sopts are available to be reserved.
