No electricity, but potable water is available in Coyote Howls at Why, AZ. The sleeping bag has made sleeping very comfy.

I've got one of those collapsing tents. I intended on buying a cartridge toilet, but have found there isn't anyplace close enough to boondock to justify the cost of the toilet....

Too bad.....I'd love to spend a week in the idealic photos at the base of a mountain range or aside a lake with no one around. At this point, I'd settle for one night....

Postby Nitroxjunkie71 » Tue Jan 20, 2015 6:09 am

What time does everyone plan on heading to the park? I have to work Saturday and probably won't be able to get there till 4 or so; depends on work.

We're planning on heading out Saturday morning. Partly sunny & 41 on Saturday!

As mentioned, the map shows only one pit toilet that's off in the youth tent area: http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/files/su ... ectric.pdf

With that in mind, what area would be best for the first arrivers to set up in?

Gerry if you were meaning a cassette toilet this one is your for $15.00. I picked it up at a yard sale. The folks told me it was never used and I like Mr. stinky so I have no need for this one.

The concrete block building in the right of this picture was the vault toilet house.

Well, I might well take a trip out there tomorrow.

IF vaults are not available, so we have a plan B? Nice part is, I guess, we don't have a bunch of reservations to cancel!

Mounds is around the corner....but it's a bit loud there. Brown county and missisinnewa are probably the closest other choices.....although I've never been to missisinnewa

Lieber has a "crap load" of pit toilets out there.

Salamonie is another great park with a lot of sites secluded in little woodsy cubby holes.

I like the description of wooded cubbys....have to visit it. I hate the open field with 1 tree per site, or worse 1 tree concept. I want to be isolated from the neighboring campers as much as possible. I'm looking for that ideal wilderness site every RV advertisement shows....middle of nowhere with no one around and just a beautiful view to enjoy.

That aside I'm going to try to make a trip out to summit lake tonight...It's a short trip that is rather make unloaded than to yank out serenity to get there and be unable to stay.

I tell ya, the one thing I wish I had....was s toilet and a shower. If I ever get a class C....this is why.

At Brown County State Park, they have the bathroom and shower facility on and heated at the Buffalo Ridge Campground. Just a thought, if some are thinking of changing the venue.

GerryS- There is boondocking in Hoosier National Forest. You would have to be aware of various dates for hunting seasons or paint your camper hunter orange. I haven't camped down there yet, but might give it a try next summer. They have campgrounds with picnic tables that have to be paid for and free camping if you only need a fire ring. I have driven around in the area and the dispersed camping spots are isolated from one another. They are free and there is a 14 day limit. Have to stay within 125 feet of road, no bringing in firewood, no water provided. Basically the same rules as all National Forests and BLM land, like out west. No scenic mountains in background, but lots of hills and valleys.

Sorry, not hijacking the thread, I just wanted GerryS to know that there is some dispersed camping available here in Indiana.

Waiting to find out if there are pit toilets available at the campground before I commit to going. :)

I just visited Summit Lake...only loop A is open for use.

The showers, as we know, are in fact closed and there is no pit/vault toilets on the loop. The only building is a wood storage shed where they sell (in season) firewood. The state has put what I assume is either the Tardis in disguise OR a handicapped accessible single-seater in front of the shower house.

So, I think we're OK....its not heated like brown...and there isn't a shower. But, its still passable at this stage of the game.

Now, as far as boondocking in the HNS...new thread :)

Gerry,
Is that by the first or second comfort station as you go in that loop?

I think it was the first...farthest away from wooded area.

I looked in the wooded area (although this time I'll be staying in the grass -- passive heat/solar gain) and it looked pretty decent... I'll probably go out Friday night...we'll see. Jury is still out.
