OH OH Apple pie !

No it's not your Mama's apple pie !

She never put Ever clear in hers !

For posterity........ I posted this somewhere after the 08 shivaree here it is again!

After 4 threatening e mails   I figured I had better post the "Apple Pie" recipe.

Went into the 08 Shivaree thread and found Kurt's version of the "Apple Pie" recipe

This is the base recipe I started with....

Here's the recipe:

2 qt Apple Cider (I use the kind that you purchase from the grocery shelf, instead of the produce section...the other makes the Apple Pie cloudy, although it tastes the same.)
4 qt Apple Juice
2 c. granulated sugar
4 - 8 cinnamon sticks (I like a lot)
Combine above ingredients, bring to boil. After reaching a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes. Remove from heat and cool till at least lukewarm (so you don't burn the alcohol off!). Add 2 cups Everclear (I go more toward 2 1/4 or so, but more than that and you'll taste the alcohol instead of the apples). Remove cinnamon sticks before bottling. Oh, and I always double the recipe because it tastes so good!

I experimented with this a bit ....

I made a double batch ( 3 Gallon) A few things I did different was to substitute brown sugar for 1/2 of the white sugar and think it add a lot.

I added 1/4 teaspoon of ginger , nutmeg , and clove.

Be careful with the clove it is potent,

Unlike Kurt's recipe I left the cinnamon sticks in the mix and let it mellow in the back of the fridge. If you are going to serve it almost immediately use 2 heaping tablespoons of powdered cinnamon in the mix instead of the sticks. Let it mellow in the jugs it came in and later decant it off into canning jars or other serving vessels as there will be some sediment in the bottom. While quite flavorful it has a rather unappetizing appearance.

So does this mean you're bringing it, or are you just telling us how we can make our own??? :?

I just started a build last month, I'm planning to come down from the Detroit area Saturday afternoon to check out the finished ones. Will people be around the campsites Saturday during the afternoon?

They will probably be slaving over their black pots preparing all kinds of good eats for the pot luck dinner. Stop by and I will have an extra plate for you to join us.

Thanks! I'm not sure if we'll be around for the dinner, but my wife Ann and I will be around for a while in the afternoon to check things out

Wow, I really enjoyed our final camp out for 2016.

That was the best "Wine and Cheese" party we've ever had. Although it doesn't need to be; It's turning in to a "mini" Pitch-in.

As we discussed at the Pitch-in dinner,

#1 the Spring (May) gathering will be at Chain of Lakes State Park in Albion, IN
http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2987.htm

#2 The fall (Oct) gathering will be at Starve Hollow (SRA) in Vallonia, IN
http://www.in.gov/dnr/forestry/4819.htm

#3 Our summer (July) gathering will be the "CRA 2017" gathering at McCormick's Creek State Park.

Look for the individual threads for each gathering.

Thanks to Kurt for another great gathering. As always the food was great and the time spent with fellow campers was exceptional. It was a nice time to see old friends and make some new ones. I hope everyone had safe travels home and already looking forward to next year. :applause:

To all who expressed concerns about our old camping pal Sadie. I came home early as things were not well at the ranch. I arrived and she seemed to rally a bit. As I sat in the recliner Monday morning and watched her labor to breath ,it was so rapid and shallow I couldn't help but scoop her into my arms and hold her. She was so little and frail having lost 1/3 of her body weight she felt like a feather. Her collar had been snug on her a few months ago just hung around her neck. I knew I was being selfish and today had to be the day. I went up the hill and dug a grave. I looked around the caboose for material to make a small box for her. I used some of the extra batten boards and the siding I had cut out to install the garden window. A bit later I called the Vet and made a drive thru appointment and Sadie and I went up the hill to the caboose and It almost seemed as if she knew. She surveyed the tractor barn that she had supervised the build on. She wandered thru the caboose with me as if to survey her project she and I had started in July of 2012. She even sniffed around the barn camper as if to remember when we built in in the drive of the old house. It was sunny and warm and at 12:45 she was gone and is now at peace up by the caboose. I little tribute to the best little gal in my life......https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKozI_3no4A
