We like playing Bocce (lawn bowling) when we go camping....everyone can play that way. Still working on the wife to come out for a day or 2, even thought the tear won't be ready(probably not even started)

activities -

I like Bocce ball. Hope Ken and spouse will decide to join in.

I like the idea of a group night paddle. As I've mentioned, I am a total novice at paddling and wouldn't try a night paddle without a group. I'm not sure how it works, do you have to have running lights like a motor boat? or I was thinking a flotilla with small lanterns could be very nice.

My idea of a handicap water race received thundering silence, so I guess we better plan on being left in the dust (I mean spray) of those water splitters.

A group paddle is a nice idea but I might turn back early. I'm not sure if I could keep up or go the distance.

Hey Gail,

Hey Gail ,

My wife won't paddle far at all{bad right arm}so if you want to ride with me{have tandem kayak} on a night paddle ,I don't think she would mind. A couple of minutes instruction is all you need. I am not sure what NY requires about lights at night, but I will use Pa. rules, and we should be fine. We usually don't go fast at night because you can't see obstructions in the water, so we just take in the lights, and stars.A group paddle at night is the safest. I have all required lights,PFD's,and paddles. We don't have to be a water splitter, just sit back ,and relax. Two paddlers is an easy paddle, twice the horse power!

Since this topic has gone quiet, I'll get back to discussing camping in Ontario. I am considering planning a trip to Algonquin the first or second week in September. I want to find "something remote" and looking in the "kiosk" area of Algonquin Park. One thing that intimidates me is the idea of "black flies". I have never seen a black fly but have read that they can be so bad that you can't breathe much less anything else.

What's the story on blackflies. How do you keep them away? Will they be gone away in early September?

Algonguin Park is definately a great park but is somewhat remote. It is excellent though for hiking, biking and canoeing. It is also farther for us than going to the Adirondacks. Its a better destination to 'get away from it all'... but thats not us I guess.

When are you considering coming up to Ontario?

Blackflys are only a problem from mid May to mid June. Yes thay can be very annoying blood sucking creatures :fb , but in September you will not have to worry about them or many other pest for that matter.

Hey Gail,

Well since you're talking about September, don't worry. Blackflies are a spring problem, not fall.

We camped mid May at Bon Echo last year. Its about 1.5 to 2 hours south of Algonquin. We had nets, but didn't use them much. I might just be lucky, blackflies don't seem to bother me much. They 'bugged' Kate a tad, but we had fun with the hold 'net thing'...

If your looking for remote, but taking your tear, you'll have to choose one of the parks off the highway in Algonquin. Pog Lake is pretty nice. Lake of 3 Rivers and Mew are close to the highway. How about Bon Echo? It will be quieter, excellent for canoeing and kayaking. Great park. I have lots of photos of it on my site.

On another note. Here is an update on the Spring TearUp. Only 135 days to go!!
We also now have 12 teardrop/tiny trailers participating, accommodating 23 fun campers and one pup.

We also should have lots of toys to play with. 15 kayaks/canoes and 1 motor boat so I'm sure we will see some heavy congestion and boat swamping on the water. I'll warn the park ranger ahead of time.

You guys really set my mind at ease about the black flies for my fall trip. Thanks. :) However, I think this means that we will see the little pests for the Tear-Up

I was really impressed with the black-fly outfit!! Very trendy.

Activities for the Tear-Up weekend. I just found out that Hamilton county will be hosting a Birding Festival all through the Tear-Up weekend. Activities will be happening all over the county.

http://hamiltoncounty.com/z-index.cfm?c ... recreation

I think some of the guided field trips are near our camp (I will have to pour over maps to check).

If there is a birding field trip near to us, I may sign up.

I will have to look into Bon Echo for camping. All of these places are just dots on a map to me  I appreciate the camping suggestions.

I like quieter. I will only camp from the Tear-Drop and would really like to find places that are quieter and will give me more of a chance to see wildlife.

Could it be reserved by a teardrop eating Winnebago planning on a weekend feast? ('')

Or perhaps a tent camper eager to be converted? ('')

Glad to see we are approaching the 100 day milestone. We are definitely ready to pull the TD out of the garage as soon as the salt is washed from the roads.

I hope it is the second one. I would hate to hear the sounds of a generator at night. :x

Looking forward to meeting new friends.

Just an update folks. We how have 13 teardrops and tiny trailers attending the spring TearUP.

Only a mere 77 days so better get packing!

Let me know if anyone else is itching to head to the adirondacks in June to join us, and I can suggest a site beside or close to the group.
