Camp ADK TearUP Spring 2005

Just got back from Lake George (cough, wheez....). We cut short our stay by one day. Pollen had to be removed from van using windshield wipers, mountains were obscured by it....... Last night, in state campground (no electricity), with us and dog, the outside temp got down to 68, the inside hovered at 78 (panting dog).....

I'm assuming we will not have electricity next week, either?

Think we will put up tent beside tear and sleep under the stars, assuming at the higher elevations, we might encounter similar situation unless weather breaks....

Was really nice camping by lake george, but daytime temps in the 90's and high humidity makes for ugly camping......

It has been great having summer here finally,but camping can be a drag in the heat. We live close to Lake George and I had to hose down all the decks, you couldn't even sit down without green goo getting all over you.

Anyway, I hear the weather is going to change by Wed, big storms on Tuesday will bring temps down to a high of 65, we can hope. I think it is soo nice camping in cooler temps. And our dog is soo spoiled with central air at home, I am not sure she could take this heat for 5 days, see you soon, we can't wait to meet everyone!

Yup, we'll be there Sat afternoon, and am looking forward to it..... may bring kayak.

In Lake George (we've attended all but 3 of the rallies since '83), we have had heat a few times, mountain showers often, but never pollen like this time. The combination of all 3 got to us. Could be that Friday night was better, but none of the 3 of us wanted a repeat of Thursday night...

Since you live in the area, was the season late this year? Or early? or just worse than normal.

If we had electricity and a/c, it would have been no where near the problem, but with 78 degrees inside the tear, and humidity, it was one of the worst nights in a long while....

Do think we will bring sleeping bags just in case, then we can sleep in tent if necessary....

btw, we are thinking about bringing 1 or 2 pies. We will be traveling Sat so no time to cook...... so, are pies ok, or is something else preferred?

We had the heat in Ohio too. We camped Thur, Fri, & Sat nights at Maumee Bay State Park. It was 97 Sat afternoon & stayed in mid to upper 70's at night. We survived by putting up the rain/shade shelter over the tear, keeping the sunroof open, the vent fan running (electric site), and the doors open with the screens zipped shut to keep the few bugs out - I think it was too hot for them! Most everyone else was in big RV's of some sort with A/C running continuously.

Somehow found some energy to bike around the park and kayak on Lake Erie a bit.

The NY weather forecast for later in the week sound great to us. We can always add a layer of fleece if it cools too much. We can run the vent fan without the AC, but not continuously like when we are plugged in.

Everything sounds like it is shaping up for a great (extended) weekend!!

Hi/Low Temp for Thurs-Monday are going to be:

64/43, 62/42. 69/45, 73/49, 73/48 which is perfect! Expecting some scattered T-showers which we can live with.. much better than full days of rain.

We did a boating trip just this past weekend and had to sweat it out with 85F+ and no wind. Would have died in the tear!

FYI- Just watched the Local news and they reported that part of the Northway (70 miles N of Albany) has collapsed because of heavy rain. Anybody heading up that way will have to take an alternate route. They say the road is going to be closed for awhile.

Kate and I have been busy getting ready. The T-Shirts are in and turned out great! We also have several prices for some rather unique contest ideas. Today we've been working on a big banner to adorn the campsite as well. Looks like we won't be leaving until Thursday, but hope to leave first thing and arrive at Fish Creek around noon.

Weather man still says showers or T-storms on Thur thru Sat, but sounds like they will be shortlived... we hope. Sunday/Monday sound perfect!

I think that we are about set. The trailer is still hitched from the weekend and the bikes and kayaks are loaded.

I am working until about noon Wed while Leslie fills cooler & last minute items.

Safe and happy traveling for everyone until we meet soon. Looks like we will miss seeing the countdown drop to 1 day after waiting for months.

Last minute things for packing. Lets see, there will be no kayaks or bikes. Kayaks fell through and the bikes, I am having the hardest time finding 24" tires. May just tube them anyway. It's her bike. But we are looking to have a great time. A few set backs can only bring good things. Time to get going and pack some more.

When I was in VA, many of the sites had electricity (VA advertises they have the best state campgrounds in the USA and so far, I'm a believer)..... do any NY state campgrounds have electricity.... I looked at reserveamerica but it doesn't show that piece of information...

Most state parks I know of in NY don't have electrical.

We don't have any issue on stays of a week or less though with the battery. Don't mind not having sewer hookup either

Probably helps keep the state parks from becoming mainly RV parks too.

When we recently stayed at Hearthstone at Lake George, I got the impression that getting anything larger than a tear in would be a problem. Hilly, windy, narrow road.... lots of tents, occasional water spigots, 50s bathrooms, stone walls that might have been built in the depression....

Also, blocked off additional entrances that made it appear that long ago, you could just pull in, find a place to camp and set up.... now the sign in booth is right at the entrance, creating some traffic problems.....

But.... the lake...!

The whole setup looks like it had been done by the wpa during the depression, and the layout was not condusive to r/v's, that's for sure.

If the temperature/humidity had been more accomodating, it would have been very nice..... $20/night for a lakeside site with a sandy beach on lake george where motel rooms were going for $125+....
