It is that time of year to start asking for time off work, saving pennies, nickles and dimes for gasoline..... scheduling the annual adventure in BEAUTIFUL COLORADO!!!!

Yes! it is time to look at our calendars and plan on joining me for "The Last Gasp of Summer 2008" Same place (Royal Gorge Campground, Canon City, CO), Same time (September 25-28, 2008).... Let's go camping!!!!

I'm making plans already. Sad to say but it will only be our 2nd campout this year.

Since I didn't get to go to the last one I want to make it to this one. Now I have a better vehicle. How much, what time and what to bring?

Last Gasp of Summer Gathering

When:
September 25th, 26th, 27th & 28th 2008

Where:
Royal Gorge Campground Canon City, CO

For those that have GPS units, the coordinates for the campground are
N 38° 27.916 W 105° 17.510

This campground is City owned, therefore, no cost, it is PRIMITIVE!
There are 2 Pit toilets and no water. This is a “true” camping experience in our tears… There is plenty of room for tents for non-teardrop owners. There is a KOA about 4 miles away for those who need cabins, or amenities. We will have to bring in firewood; there are fire pits and hopefully, depending on the weather, NO fire ban. There are 2 pavilions with 2 concrete tables in each. Additional tables can be put up outside of the pavilions. Bring your chairs too!

It will be cool to cold at night, bring extra blankets, heaters or what you may need to have a comfortable night! Stores are few and far between and prices a little higher than in town. Stock up…

Follow the signs from Highway 50 towards The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park. Once past Buckskin Joes, the road will climb through some tight curves. You will encounter a tight hairpin curve that climbs to the left. After the curve, at the top of the hill, you will see a picnic area to your left, THIS IS NOT IT!

A little further on your left will be a dirt road. Take it and follow signs to the campground. We will have RED TEARDROP markers with red/white/blue streamers installed to help you find your way. The road is passable for two-wheel drive, however, may have some ruts. Watch for signs and be prepared for an awesome “Colorado style” camping experience!
We’ll do a pot luck supper Saturday night and I know a few guys are already packing up their dutch ovens… Come up, let’s have some fun!

hmmmm...... you make it so tempting ... for me = $225 or so in gas, for 1248 miles round trip.... a couple of days off work.... and a 10+ hr drive each way.....

It was a cold & rainy afternoon on Friday when the tiny team of KP & Dana pulled into the beautiful Colorado Rockies near the Cuchara, CO.

KP said that it hailed on them, poured buckets of rain, lightening & thundered so loud that it shook the ground. But, they were not detered because they brought the SUNSHINE with them. It was Dana's bright SUNNY TEAR she has been working on the past several months.

Saturday the weather cleared up just enough for Dana to catch a small trout in one of the two gorgeous lakes near the campsite. But, by afternoon it was pouring again. Us newbies met up with them when they went into Cuchara to get cell phone service. We had booked a room at a local B&B since our tear isn't done. We hung out at the DOG Bar until the weather cleared and then headed up to the camp site. Finally, we got to see the BRIGHT little camper seeking thru the trees. Dana & KP fixed us some jalepeno hot dogs & fried taters for dinner and we did some hiking.

I guess I can't figure out how to post the picture...check out pics in my album.

Anyway, we plan to get our build done to go to the Last Gasp....if not, we're planning to go the LCGIII in October. #4 Dana & I will go, if the guys can't get off work.

Thanks for the great pictures of Dana's "Sunshine".... That KP is a talented man! I'm sure they had a great time with the build....

We just arrived in Colorado Springs a few days ago. We should be moved into our place by the 15th or 20th. Lets hope so, then we'll be able to make it!

Hi Pam,
How's the weather at the campground at the end of September? I'm a big baby when it comes to cold and snow. I just want to know what I'm getting myself into.

Can't wait to see you again! The weather typically runs 70's in the day time and 50's at night. Actually, it is probably some of the best camping weather!!!! I take a few layers and can pile on or take off.... That seems to work well....
