LCG trip stop over 10/21/2009...

Postby Darren » Sun Sep 13, 2009 3:01 pm

I don't like driving straight through to LCG so I'm looking for a place to spend Wednesday night (10-21-2009).

I was looking for "new to me" places to stop over and came up with Devils Den State Park. Any opinions about the park or suggestions on another place to spend the night.

Also if anyone is planning to camp in Oklahoma or Arkansas that night let me know. I don't like caravans but would like to camp with some people for the night.

Thanks,
Darren

It's a beautiful state park. I don't think it will get too full that time of year, but you might want to check about a reservation. The War Eagle Craft Fair is Oct. 15-18, but people may be staying in the area because of the fall colors.

Lake Fort Smith State Park at Mountainburg has re-opened and is a good option.

I second that on the Park is great place to visit. I wish we could have a small gathering there sometime. Here is a link to the park website : LINK. Enjoy and have fun. Just down the road is the New Lake Fort Smith State Park: LINK. The campsites are a little father apart and in the fall and winter you would have a Lake view in most all campsite.

Gary and I will be leaving on Wednesday and will be staying in Arkansas on Wednesday night .... we could either meet up with you in Arkansas or meet up somewhere in Missouri. We will be going down 13 highway to Springfield. Trudy

Susan and Pat, Thanks for the info.

Trudy - Did you and Gary have a place picked out to stop? Devils Den is 4:28 hours for me on Wednesday and the rest of the way to LCG is 6:30 hours.

I found Devils Den by searching for Civilian Conversation Corps projects. I really like the style and history associated with them.

Victor I like the Hwy 74 from the south entrance drive. It is twisty and sharp turns but shorter ( not over 13 foot trailers < most tears will make it fine > - MAXIMUM TRAILERS ONLY - if larger use HWY 170 ). It is a beautiful drive in the spring and fall when trees are turning. Enjoy the travel and park.

Pat

Darren,
Kathy and I may be interested as well. We are the same way: hate to caravan, but love to stay with people we know. We can look at options with Gary/Trudy at Crawford.

I don't think you will be disappointed with Devil's Den. I have stayed there twice on my Beaver's Bend trips. I have always said the drive in and out is worth the stay. I agree with Pat, if you are comeing from the north bypass the 170 route and follow 74 into the park. It's a fun drive :D
Later down the road

I am planning to leave Wednesday and stay somewhere, then drive into LCG on Thursday. Don't know if it is worth it for me to go all the way to Arkansas, but I'll watch and see where you all decide to stay.

Otherwise , when it gets closer, I'll stay somewhere south of Eufaula Lake likely ... maybe down by Hugo, OK

Stop on Way to LCG

Postby Mrs Rayvillian » Tue Sep 22, 2009 10:37 am

Gary and I are thinking about staying at Corps of Engineers park at Maumelle AR ... just north of Little Rock. That will be a 7 hour trip on Wednesday for us ... and then 3 hours (taking 167 out of Little Rock) on Thursday. After the fantastic gathering at Crawford this past weekend ... we are REALLY ready for LCG. Trudy

That looks like a good stop to me. I checked on ReserveAmerica and several of the sites are already reserved. I think we should reserve as soon as we all agree.

I'm thinking about hitting Devils Den on the trip home.

Yes, Phil... it's a state park so should be nice ... can't reserve ahead, but it would be a good half way point. I have never camped there.
Or McGee Creek is nice , but over between Antlers and Atoka.
We'll talk about that next week or so ... I'll give ya a call , busy this week.

I went ahead and made reservations for site A-3. There are several in that section that are still available. Trudy
