Crazy Horse Volksmarch or March of the Teardrops!

Postby dakotamouse » Fri Jan 15, 2010 8:04 pm

Once a year, the first weekend after Memorial Day weekend, there is a hike up to the Crazy Horse Monument in S. Dakota.

http://www.ava.org/clubs/bhva/CrazyHorse09.htm

This is a noncompetive walk that takes you right up under the nose of the sculpture. This years event should be the weekend of June 5th.

Would anyone here be interested in meeting up for a small, informal gathering. Nothing fancy. Just a little camping and a bit of hiking?

A park ranger at Custer State Park reccomended the Stockade Lake North Unit Campground for us.

I have reserved site #32E for Myron and I. Aaron Coffee has site 31E. I hope some of you can make it down too, but I would reserve a site soon as I wasn't able to get my first choice...already!

here are some links...

As we get closer to the date we can work out some plans. Somewhere in there we will have to have a potluck or two.

We didn't camp there but loved our visit to Custer State Park. This would be a great trip. I did stumble onto something in your linked page:

FEES

All walkers must pay $3 (Credit Only).
Payment of fees must be CASH ONLY, no credit cards are accepted. Event Registration Fees must be paid by all participants, regardless of group affiliation.

...
:?
Is that credit or cash only?

Also your link goes to 2009 page. Although it doesn't matter much as the 2010 page still shows the 2009 dates.

Hmmmm, badly worded. The fee to walk up to the top is $3.00 and they want that in cash. Something else that isn't mentioned is that the indian tribe in charge of the site is also doing a food drive that day.

So to get in will cost you

1. 3 dollars cash
2. One non perishable food item.

Then you will be allowed to participate in the hike AND tour the really nice museum on site.

It's really a great deal for everyone.

Just a reminder about this event. If you aren't a hiker, and trust me this is an easy hike, come on out to enjoy the hills. Take in Mount Rushmore, especially the night lighting ceremony. We can do a little potluck and gather around a campfire.

where do we call to make reservations?

the first like you gave, is that where we call?

I'd love to make it

I was there when the walk was being held a few years ago and I thought it was great.

Thanks

Just got home and unpacked so I'm really pooped! Very small turnout. Just myself, Myron my husband and Aaron Coffee. But we had a great time. The weather was a little iffy with some rain off and on.

There was another teardropper, Johnny G. that dropped by on Sunday after Aaron had left and Myron and I went on a bike ride. He left a note saying that he decided he needed to hit the road as he had a long drive ahead of him.

I do have some pictures to post but I think I'll do that tomorrow.....I'm bushed! :)

at long last .........photos! Sorry it took so long but I got side tracked with a root canal!!

Here are my husband Myron and Aaron Coffee at the start...

Image

They wound us through the woods and occassionaly on a real road.

Getting a bit closer here....

Image

coming around the backside........which will one day be done in the round..

at the top....

Checking out his armpit....

heading back down....

almost done....

Back at camp this is Aaron's teardrop in the North Stockade campground...

It was a small gathering but all in all a good time. If you can make it to this event I think it is worth it. For $3 you get to hike to the top and a nonperishable food donation will get you into the museum.

Thanks, I wouldn't be surprised if they had 5000 walkers per day. They have a nice group of volunteers helping with parking and sign up. The parking people are on horseback.
