Lake Tour - Big Hill Lake - Kansas

Postby Darren » Sun Apr 03, 2011 10:22 am

I took a drive yesterday to check out some of South East Kansas' camping locations. Big Hill Lake is very nice and it's a Corp park so no entrance fees. There are 2 main campgrounds, Cherryvale Park and Mound Valley Park. Cherryvale Park has 2 small group camping areas, 4 in each one with no electric. They are very nice but small for a gathering.

The Mound Valley campground has 88 sites and all are pretty nice. The loop with sites 22 - 36 is built on the side of a hill and they are really cool. Although it's very hilly they did a great job at making the sites level. It really reminded me of the terrain in the Ozarks. Here is my favorite site from this loop.

2nd view of the same site.

You can see here some of the uphill sites.

I'm going to have to call this park my 2nd favorite in the state. Crawford gets #1. This would make a great place for a gathering that is centrally located for KAMO (Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma) people to attend. The park host will talk your leg off. I had my Crawford shirt on.

Can't forget FOOD! If it's a weekend that my uncle is working it's 30 minutes to his place. He sold 80 slabs of ribs on Saturday. It's about an hour to THE chicken place.

Here is where the park is located on
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source= ... 8&t=h&z=14]Google Maps

If you wish driving directions you can enter your zip code or street address in the BLANK SPACE labeled as "B" then invert the the "A" and "B" with the reverse at the end. That way you can print out the route or map and drive it. If you do not reverse the From and Destination the directions will be from the park to where you STARTED ....... now that you are confused .... have fun playing with Google Maps =)

Pat

Ps: it looks like 212 miles for me :)

 70ish miles from me. I have never seen that park though. Our friends must have been at the other one. They would go and set up camp for a couple of weeks.

Whoa, buddy....... that looks like a good crappie/bass lake to fish in. We go by that area every time we head to Tahlequah, OK but have never seen the lake. Cherryvale is about a 3 1/2 our trip...... totally doable.

The reports seem to have a couple of weeks lag time. Love those trees in the water.. Wonder if it is too rough for a kayak?

Hmmmmm ..... 207 miles for me ... that's one way .
Would be a four hour drive for sure, so would be good for a long weekend I guess.

Are you thinking of some time this year?
