Made some more progress today, got my wood for my pattern put together and after making some dimension marks I used some plastic lattus strips to lay out my pattern. after making some adjustment I used black spray paint to mark my lines. Now all I have left to do is break out the jigsaw and cut it out...

Strong Frame

Postby eamarquardt » Sat Jan 23, 2010 8:04 am

And I thought my frame was strong.

I think you beat me!

I like the shape of your tear. I think I'll try and get closer to your shape. I'm gonna keep the vertical front to maximize interior floor space but I like tucking in the rear end a bit. Here's my current mock up:

Image

Where the two horizontal blue tape stripes end will be the cabin's rear bulkhead with about a 14 inch storage space with a door on each side. I'll have a 20 gallon water tank , the battery, and room for chairs and other stuff so I don't have to store/carry stuff in the cabin when traveling. The galley will have a small r/v range/oven and a 3 way reefer (on hand) installed.

What is "lattice strip" and where did you get it. I used sched 125 pvc pipe but I like your technique for marking the curve with spray paint.

Looking good.

Cheers,

Gus

Hi Gus, the plastic Lattice strip I got from Home depot in the molding section it's about $3 for an 8' strip and it is very flexable. I just stapled it to some wooden blocks and then screw it down to the pattern and made adjustment till I got what I wanted...

Greg,

I really like this design! I too used a plastic lattice strip (one with the light color fake wood grain) to lay out the curves, but I had trouble tracing the curves because the strip flexed too much. I ended up having to stick on some inner blocks with double-sided tape to hold the strip in place. Your method of using the spray paint is a great idea. Thank you for posting the pics.

I know you probably thought of this - but I have to ask - where is the safety margin in case a cable fails when towing? It sure would be a great sparkler if that should happen at highway speed - you may want to add some safety pins when in the Up position

:applause: :applause:  Watching this one. Love the raise/lower floor. Do you have an idea of what a frame like this would cost?

Well lets see 3000lb cable cap. I think that there is a bit of safety margin, but then again the floor lowered still has about 5" of ground clearence...

Not yet, but I'm shooting for 1500 to 1800lbs when finished
