Add me to the list - update - got back on the horse

Postby aggie79 » Sun Jul 22, 2012 3:54 pm

Add me to the table saw accident list. Nothing got cut off but my middle right finger is about 1/8-1/4" narrower. I'll know as soon as my number is called in the ER. (This place is packed.)

Dammit Tom. Glad it's no worse than that but any negative clearance in that department ain't good. Luckily I'm still on the "not yet" list. Take care of yourself.

Damn, Tom. So sorry to here that.

We've had lots and lots of discussions about safety and accidents, but accidents still lurk for even the most experienced of us. Fortunately, it sounds like your injury will leave you with a sober reminder and not a life-long handicap. As one who has been there, done that, and endured those long ER hours and the even longer and numerous hours of replaying the accident over in my mind, I hope you have a quick recovery.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

Thank you everyone for the condolences. As far as table saw accidents go, I am fortunate. I will need to see a hand specialist later this week to say for sure but there doesn't appear to be substantial damage to my middle finger. It was really a "rip cut" in that the saw blade traveled halfway down the left side of the finger, slicing the skin from the bone. There doesn't appear to be any bone or ligament damage. The skin on the tip of the finger is gone but the tacked the rest of the skin back in place with a few stitches.

Take care,
Tom

OUCH!! Glad the damage was not worse than it is.

The only accident I have had with a table saw was a 1'x1' piece of plywood kicked back on me and left a foot long bruise on my belly.

Now, I did try to take a finger off with an angle grinder. But it did not do any serious damage either.

That sounds damned painful Tom. I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope you heal quickly and can get back to ripping wood, but not fingers, soon.

Oh No!! I am sorry to hear that! That is just like what my friend did, ripped his finger on the table saw. He is fully healed now. I hope you do not have any issues in the healing process and luckily we are just coming into August, so you can take some time off in the Air Conditioning!

Update - the hand specialist says everything looks okay. He does have some concerns that skin flaps/fragments may not be getting enough blood supply but right now it looks like they will heal if things don't get worse.

Tom, sorry to hear about your accident. The hand surgeon's news does sound promising.

Now please do yourself one favor, for the future. Get back on the horse.....go to your workshop and at least turn on your tablesaw. As soon as you're able, make sure you rip or crosscut a piece of wood.

Why? I almost cut off my left thumb on 1984 on a radial arm saw and I cannot use one. I can't stand the sound of the motor moving along the arm.

I didn't go near it for months and then I was too afraid of it to use it. I gave it to my Dad and never used it again.

I respect my table saw, my scrollsaws, my miter saw, planer, routers, etc., and I frequently use all of them. But no radial arm saws in my arsenal.

Good luck.

:( Suffering empathy pains here. Really makes me cringe. So happy your finger is going to be ok. Now happy camping and send that bad boy to me. Just kidding!

Thank you. This might slow me down, but I'm not gonna quit. Years ago, actually decades ago, I cut a slice off the tip of middle finger on my left hand using a panel saw, and I don't have any inhibitions from that accident. I plan to finish the new workbench I was building ASAP.
