State Park Marathon

Postby davel » Sat Apr 08, 2006 9:42 am

Cindy and I are fixing to do what we're calling a State Park Marathon on Easter weekend. We're going to visit 15 State Parks over that weekend to check them out. We're going to have a list of specific things to look at and photograph. Hope to put some sort of online guide together on the Tears of Texas site. We're thinking of specific things to photograph (ie. restrooms, showers, campsite, several scenic shots). If anyone can think of anything else to photograph let me know.

We've also decided to probably checkout individual campgrounds along the way as we see them and maybe even stop and talk about gatherings there with them. It seems it's pretty difficult to coordinate the gatherings at state parks, they don't make it easy and after looking at the problems we've had with Inks Lake, it seems we have to make reservations at least 4 to 5 months out to get spots and then there's no guarantee we'll get them together.

Check out our planned route http://www.tearsoftexas.com/spt.html

Dave,
There is a park just west of Kerrville you should check out. I don't think it's a State park but it's a nice one. Right on the river and the deer are so tame they'll eat out of your hand. The one at Whitney is my favorite.

Stonepro, will do. Whitney is a nice state park, didn't think about including that one. We'll get it included in our final guide, our family goes there often.

Lake Somerville SP
Buescher SP
Bastrop SP
McKinney Falls SP
Pedernales Falls SP
Blanco SP
Guadalupe River SP
Garner SP
Enchanted Rock SNA
Longhorn Caverns
Inks Lake SP
Colorado Bend SP
Meridian SP

Enchanted Rock and Longhorn Caverns are just a couple of sightseeing stops we're going to make. The is no camping at those locations. Also Cindy has just added a couple of place to check out that aren't in the SP system. She's going to mention those in another thread.

Dave,

When you go to Guadelupe River State Park, you will drive right by Steve Jacob's house and you will be about 15 minutes from my house. You must at least come by and say hello.

That sounds great, Dave. I'll PM you my address...the best way is for you to look it up on Mapquest, but I'll put some directions in the PM.

Steve, I'll plug it in to Streets and Trips and use the GPS. I rarely ever get lost with the GPS. 8) :D

Kathleen, Big Bend is a little far for this trip, but I do really like it out there. It would require a little more than the three days we have. Are you from out that way?

Joanne,

Tell Lenny that I used to eat West colaches all the time till we moved to Ennis. Colache Depot in Ennis beats West colaches hands down. I can't wait to get going it's going to be a fun trip.

Kathleen,
We've actually only been to Big Bend once, but I loved it out there I could live out there if I could find a way to make a living out there.
