Weather Report, Winter Camp Feb 19-21, 2016

Postby robfisher » Mon Feb 01, 2016 10:28 pm

We have some interest in another winter campout in Idaho. Last year's was a great time at Leslie Gulch. It appears the road may be pretty tough with all the snow this year so am looking at a couple of other locations. There is a year round Idaho Power campground at CJ Strike that has heated restrooms. Or there are a couple of BLM spots with pit toilets close to Givens Hot Springs.

Is there any interest in a gathering either of the last two weekends in February?

I would like to add Hells Canyon to our "Places to TD Camp in 2016, as we have not explored that corner of Oregon yet.

Brian,

That sounds great. There is a place in Joseph you can ride the rails on a pedal car  . We have been meaning to get out there and check it out.

We were going to try last year but the campgrounds were full and it was a really bad fire season. This is still on our list of places to go.

We have picked a date for Winter Camp. February 19-21, 2016. All are welcome to come. I am still working out the where details but leaning toward the Idaho Power campgrounds at CJ Strike for this one. The decision will be made in the next couple days for sure. But the date is set, if anyone can attend please do.

Good Luck with this gathering, Rob! Wishing we could make it, but now that we're taking care of my father 24/7, we're not going to be able to get away for a while. Anyway, hoping you do this again next year, as we'll be more likely to be able to attend, then! See you at the IRG, my Friend!

You and Kay take care of Roger. Say hello to him for me.

Rob. I am good for a camp around CJ, or Bruneau Sand Dunes.

Brian:
As of last fall, it was paved but with lots of potholes- all outlined in pink paint tho- easier to see that way I guess. There have been "road closed- construction" signs up for a couple of years but I've never seen anyone working on it. That is a cattle drive road so go slow on corners and expect some pre-digested grass stains on the front of the trailer. A really pretty drive, all forest and twisty roads. There are several campgrounds on the way but only one had water until you get to Hells Canyon. There is a nice quilt/antique shop in Halfway that has cast-iron stuff. Watch out for rocks! The road is in a slide area and last weekend I failed to clear a 9" rock in my Mazda 3- cost me $3300 to get it fixed.- In short, good road if driven carefully.

Sorry Rob
So not as to appear like I have hijacked your thread while investigating the area around Hells Canyon.
I am starting another thread to explore this as a possible gathering point sometime later in the year.
Hope you can get something going in February!
