Land of Mordor Expedition v2.0 June 15-18 2017

Postby Wolffarmer » Mon Aug 29, 2016 10:24 pm

Would any one like to try this again next year, about mid June?

Randy

Edit June 15-18

Do not worry if you do not have a vehicle or trailer you would not want to take out there. I am offering rides and I have more than one 4x4.

Mordor v 2.0

Dates June 15-18 2017

Where. Empty spot on the map between Rupert,Carey and Arco Idaho.

What will be provided. Guidance to the area, lots of BS. I have tow straps, chains. Should have jumper cables by then. I usually carry a bunch of tools. Some spare gas.

What we will do. I plan once again to make this a "Movable gathering in the desert", Will see lots of dry grass, sagebrush, lava rock, blue sky ( I hope this time ), explore places few people other than locals know about. Long boring drives between sights. Will try to get places for some interesting lava hikes. At least I think it is interesting. Indian and pioneer things. Sheep and cattle ranching.

What to bring. High ground clearance vehicles and trailers. I do not plan on any real 4x4ing but if it rains would be nice. Gas for about 150 miles, from experience gas millage will be lower. Good tires, spare. Water, plan on at least 1 gallon per day, More if you wash dishes each meal, lots more if you can't live without showering. Food, I am not not planning any group meals, just let what happens happen. Porta pots and shelters if you wish, There are no services at all out there. Mountain bikes, we should be stopped long enough for a ride or two if you wish. Good walking shoes for the lavas. Lava hiking can be rough and not like any you have done before. It will probably be warm during the day and cold at night so will need to dress accordingly. Can still have frosts that time of year. Radios for communication among our selves. Forgot what the service is called. Shovel if you have one. I have one to bring and no real need to run out an buy one if you don't have one.

Dogs. Dogs are allowed but if we happen to see some large, long haired white dogs probably should have your dog on a leash. Those white dogs are sheep guard dogs. I have seen them out there. They have just come up, inspected my camp and moved on. Last year we did not see any but we only saw cattle.

Wildlife. If you bring the bar crowd we can have one. Other wise possible to see coyotes, wolfs, badgers, lizards, snakes, rattle snakes, antelope, deer, elk, sage hens, flowers, and who knows what.

Dangers, rattle snakes, black widows, breaking a leg, ticks, badgers, I do not consider coyotes or wolfs to be dangerous to humans. The lavas, they killed two women about 3 years ago between Carey on the Craters of the Moon head quaters. Vehicles breaking down, tires destroyed, damage to vehicles's undercarriage. Again I do not plan on any true 4x4 stuff. Most of these roads I have traveled with my 1981 2 wheel drive Datsun pickup with only an occasional rock "ping". :FNP Also have been on a bunch with my 1974 BMW motor cycle. And many of those roads have since been "improved". More like destroyed in my thinking.

If some one does not have a trailer to take out there tenting would be just fine. Or just roll up in a trap on the ground. I have done that. If you do not have a vehicle for the desert I can take 2 people and their gear with me. Meet at my house and we can go from there. Other people may be able to volunteer rides. I also have more than one 4x4 to take. Don't fear to ask I would like to show this area to people. Lack of transportation is not a reason to miss it. Who knows how many more years I have left.

Not sure yet where we will meet up to jump off. Kimama town sight worked well last year but there are other places.

Been wanting to get out into that area for some time now. Missed the last trip so maybe I will have to see if I can make this one. Would be nice to go in with someone who knows the area. Makes it that much better.

I got to thinking that I might be able to encourage some more people to go. I do not want to step on anyones toes though so thought I would run this by you first. I have been loosely organizing some Overlanding trips for the past few years. I have been posting trips here http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/t ... Adventures . I have been wanting to participate in your expedition and though we might be able to blend the two together. before I posted to the expedition portal I though I better make sure your ok with that. Let me know. George.

Sounds good. I will probably post a link to here as well as start a thread there.

Here is a picture video of the trip we did yesterday in the Gooding area.
