Mordor v5.0 Back to Mordor. June 5-9 2020

Postby Wolffarmer » Mon Dec 09, 2019 9:02 pm

Lets go back to Mordor. Early June grass should not be to dry yet. Threat of storms is .....well not high. I am looking to spending 2 nights at the 'Wood Road Kipuka Trail Head". Then head back to The Wall of Death. Plans may change.

Meet in the town of Minidoka. I have yet to scout a good location there. Not that it will not be hard to spot another teardrop trailer there. A good place for people coming from Boise. and for people coming from the South Lands.

From there it is not to far to where I plan to camp. The trail there is not difficult. The lava portions are not hard at all. I walked it the Summer of 1991. In the heat of the day. I will not be doing that again. We can also go to the what is called the Baker Indian Caves. If you wish to go in them try to have not been in a cave for the 2 weeks preceding. The bat white nose fungus thing. And hope I can find them again. Last time I was there was 1997. Real hard to find unless someone has put up a marker.

AS always most important item to bring. A sense of humor.
4X4 not vital but high ground clearance is.
I will have some chains and tow straps so do not feel like you have to bring them.
Good spare tire
Extra gas if you need it. There is no gas stations after Shoshone, Paul or Rupert Idaho.
The Wood Road trail is a good place for a mountain bike. I plan on taking my electric.

So meet up in Minidoka Idaho around 12 noon. Or do you want to make it later.

Meeting in Minidoka. After you cross the railroad tracks you will be heading east. in about 100-200 yards take the left fork in the road. in a bit there will be a wide spot between the road and a large lawn/ball field. We can park there and meet up. Minidoka is not so big we will miss each other. Specially any one towing a teardrop or other small trailer.

I like the idea of hitting different spots especially different form what I've seen so far. Do you by chance have a map that shows these?

I hope to make this one. Hoping things will be settled for me by then. I sold my house at the end of August and am crammed in an apartment and the trailer is crammed on a storage unit, so I'll probably just bring the truck.

Who needs an apartment when you have a teardrop? you're poking holes in my backup plan for next years property taxes...

'Wood Road Kipuka Trail Head"

68 years in Idaho and I had to Google up what a kipuka was. And I moved pipe in one a million years ago west of I.F. without having a name for it.

I will have to get some bike time in before this trip. Don't want to kill myself pedaling through a lava field.... Sounds like a good trip.

Wolfgang, maybe plans will change. They have before.

With the small China trade deal done, I think the problem has been kicked down the road for a bit.
Mom is during 90 in 34 days. :wine party:
She does still quite well, but the window of opportunity likely wont be open for trips like this much longer.
For me the rewards outweigh the risks.

I'm curious about the maps as well, if you have one plotted.

What is "the wall of death"?
Holy cow, Rose is a teenager now! Done? Surely you jest. A teardrop is never "done".
