Cast Iron Waffle maker Show Down at SLO

Postby Lazybones » Mon Jul 30, 2007 10:45 pm

Hey Doug,

I am challenging you to an Iron Waffle Maker Show Down. Batter made from scratch Saturday morning
I will be bringing my Wagner and the Ideal.

Lee

I will not be able to make it but I think instead of a one on one you could open it to a competition for any entrant who has a cast iron waffle-maker(borrowed or owned) with your same restrictions of batter made from scratch and Saturday morning. My question though would the competitors allows one to started the night before--- sourdough waffles and to get those who do not have a waffle iron they could compete for the best topping again having to be made Saturday morning.

Just my 2 cents
Rick

Sure thing Lee... and I think it's a good idea that you bring 2 irons...that way you have a backup when the first one gets stuck!!!  However, I think we should use a common base batter and who can doctor up the batter the best...that way we all are on equal ground, and probably a lot easier than dragging a sifter etc...along. Someone toting a sourdough starter surely would take top honors. Just like nascar...we all run the same basic fuel, you just tweak it on race day...Doug

What kind of "fuel" are you thinking. I don't really have a recipe I just dump so much flour, oil, baking powder,eggs,etc... put it in the Iron and :worship:

As to the sticking part  Your funny.

"fuel" a metaphor for batter out of the box...but since I'm sure everyone can tell the difference between a box batter and a scratch built one and that a box one wouldn't stand a chance...I'll take my chances...I've got no recipe, just what the box says and how I doctor it up. Doug

I don't know if that is true. I think most people use a mix and might think it tastes better since it is what they know and like.

Ok, here's a recipe from my Alfred Andresen baking booklet circa 1905
2 cups flour
2 cups milk
1/2 cup melted butter
2 teaspoons sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs, with whites and yokes beaten seperately.

So there ya have it, a bonofide waffle recipe from the same period as most of your cast iron waffle irons.
Here's some pics of my most recently acquired waffle iron (Alfred Andresen)

I keep getting out bid on e-bay :( I will be on jury duty for SLO and don't expect to make it but I want one ready to feed Gage at Spamboree in Oct.

Dean: any advice on picking one on e-bay? So far I have skipped any with repaired parts and any with comments like "it is good condition for its age" but no mention about repairs, cracks or welds.
If anyone on the forum is bidding, send me a PM and I may not try to top you.

Dennis,
The Wagner #8 or the Griswold All American #8 should be able to be had for well under 50 bucks. I've snagged them with high bases as cheap as 26.00.
It's the fancy ones that go for too much money, like the Griswold Heart Star I paid too much for...
I say wait until the last few seconds to place a bid...

I'm gonna miss the showdown as well... Will miss my chance to meet Ranger "Too Slim" Matt aka The Dutch Oven Guru too. :(

I will volunteer my expert taste buds to be a fair and impartial judge no matter how much cash is slipped to me under the table by Doug.
