Camping my way to IRG 2.0

Hey everybody!

I'm sitting here and thinking about my route to IRG from Albuquerque. Since I don't have a trailer yet I was hopeing to stay at motels along the way, then I realized how much it will cost me.

So being the cheapo that I am, I'm thinking of camping as I go. The only problem is I am don't know where to camp in Arizona or in CA and I don't know the fees either.

Does any one have any good suggestions on camp grounds along I-40 thru AZ and on the 1 in CA?

Most of the public coastal campgroungs in California are $25 a night.

You still have plenty of time to build your Teardrop! You could get the basic TD built and weathertight and finish later if you run out of time.

You don't mention your want/need of ammenities, but you can camp for free in the National Forest outside of Flagstaff. An easy ingress/egress would be the Bellemont exit of I-40 west of Flagstaff; and then a short 200 yards west on the access road and then north on FR171 a couple of miles and you'll be in a beautiful ponderosa forest.
Camping in the lower elevations as you head west too much further, in July, might get a bit 'toasty'. There is a KOA in Williams, just north of I-40, that is owned by a relative of a sometime contributor here, azcraig. Also, south of Williams, you can camp at White Horse Lake... a nice place. http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/kai/recreation/campgrounds/whitehorse.shtml
There are other NFS campgrounds closer to Williams, but none nicer.

A worthwhile short side-trip, to help break up the boredom, would be to Delgadillo's SnowCap in Seligman - it's a hoot!

Mandy you should be able to drive to Williams, AZ. There is Kiabab lake

Don't foget you need to make reservations early especially in California along the coast, and also think about the heat inland like Arizona and the deserts of California. You can always pay the extra car and camp with us on the way up the hwy 101.

Thanks so much everyone. Yea I'm sure I could have a TD done(Not!) and all by IRG but I need the money for the build to go to IRG. Maybe next time I might have a TD done. I hope. I like the idea of caravaning, when is everyone going though NM if at all?

I've been away from the forum for a while but this is the kind of information I think is extremely valuable for all of us and would be great if organized under one thread. I thought I would do it with the thread I started but I've been too busy to cut and paste everything. Members are posting some very cool travel suggestions, but they're all over the place.

Can you or anyone start a sticky for "Routes and Highlights To IRG" or whatever? (Selfishly, this is as much for me as anyone because I'm trying to keep track of all this good stuff for IRG and future travel/camping.)

Thanks for allowing me to dump this suggestion on someone else. I hope there's an easy way to do this, otherwise, we can just dig a little for our treasures by searching.

I do not know how old you are (There is no need to reply with your age) or if you come with someone thier age may help with expenses.
Or if you or your traveling companion have a dissability.
There is pretty good discounts on campsites at almost all National Forest campsites, & National Parks.
When we travel we try to stay at one or the other.
So if you or anyone else out there falls under either of the above catigories I would suggest getting in touch with the National Parks Dept.
Or talk to a ranger at a Nat. Park.
You may be able to get a free lifetime pass or for a small fee.
Pass also alows you to enter a Nat. Park for free.

The only exception I have found over the last two summers of traveling is in California, If the campground is now classified as a
State & Federal Park together They will not give any discounts THANKS ARNOLD if he has his way they would shut almost all campgrounds in CA.

I will tell ya we traveled close to 30,000 miles in 2007 National Parks & forest are the way to go, no fees or near nothing in some nat. Forest,Nat.Parks aprox. 50% off.
