Route 66 advice...

Postby Otto13 » Tue Jul 20, 2010 9:14 am

We are going to be off November 11th & 14th (Thursday-Sunday) and are thinking about taking a quick Route 66 run into Arizona. There are tons of web sites with all kinds of suggestions and directions...however, it seems that many of you are VERY experienced in traveling this grand old highway and know the do's and don'ts of the road. We live in So Cal (San Bernardino mountains just above Route 66) and were thinking of leaving Wednesday afternoon (5:00 PM'ish) so as to be in Arizona (or vicinity) early Thursday morning. Any ideas? Anybody want to join us? We appreciate for any suggestions, help or advice!!!

I am reserved for November 10th arrival one night spot D-10
www.sbcountyparks.com for reservations

In November I might join you. I do Route 66 every year but it is a event type and the towns are more lively during the run so it would be nice to do it without the 1000's of cars and people going down it at one time.
This is the event we do http://www.azrt66.com/funrun.htm and here are the pictures
http://azroundup.net/files/photos.html
Coming from where you are I might camp at Calico Ghost town and then start from there then we can drive starting at Golden Shores drive and stop at Oatman then continue through all the small towns and end up in Seligman to camp. Then we can go to Williams if you like or call it a trip it would be your vacation trip so you decide.

Calico Wednesday night would be a great starting place...We're a couple hours from there. Sure would be nice to follow someone in the know! :applause:

I'd be up for this, depending on last minute work sheduling. I did the trip from Los Angeles to Williams, using as much Old 66 as was possible, 15 years ago in my '63 Fairlane.

I have a pic of the car just east of Sitgreaves Pass, in front of the stone pillars before the re-creation of the gas station! It's neat to see that someone had thought (and had gotten the scratch together for) the same thing, "It'd be nice to rebuild what was once here"...

Here, in this pic belonging to TerryLBeck (thank you!)

We're up for anything! We can only commit to four days but my wife and I would love to join as many people as willing to go and do a Route 66 mini-run! :vroom:

We are very good at cooking, cleaning, setting & tearing down but most of all...if we lead...we can almost guarantee getting everyone lost! (We'd like to reserve a spot near the back if possible...) Any suggestions to what we need to do just holler away and we'll get it done! :ok:

Just a note that it will be very cold in November. Should be fun.

Cold is good! Our Teardrop has proven to be rather toasty when need be. My wife just said, "As long as it's not Donner Pass cold!"

We are still interested in driving a little Route 66...in another thread there is a meeting of the Arizona Tearjerkers at Cabela's on Saturday. Someone suggested starting at Calico Wednesday (Wednesday evening would be our arrival time) and then heading east. Maybe we can make the other gathering as well. (?)

I have never set up a run/trip before...do I make reservations ahead of time? Get a list of people together? Any suggestions or is anyone willing to take the lead in organization?

I'm a teacher and school just started so 12 hours days will be the norm for the next few weeks...and a mini-66 run is something to look forward to...

Possible itinerary
Wednesday: Calico
Thursday: Route 66
Friday: Route 66
Saturday: Cabelas
Sunday: Head home

Otto I am working on it right now and will have some info later today. I am thinking Wednesday the 10th showing up at Calico leave Thursday late morning to Route 66 to Seligman, AZ, Friday the 12th late afternoon leave for Glendale, AZ to the Cabela's show. I would have to check and see if it will be OK to spend the night at Cabela's or we can spend the night at White Tanks camp ground close by. http://www.maricopa.gov/parks/white_tank/Camping.aspx

Well I would start by making your reservation for Calico and letting everyone know what spot your at so we can all be near each other. I will call tomorrow to reserve my spot for one night. Seligman we can camp for free unless you want to spend yhe high price of the KOA there. The camp ground I am thinking about is sheltered from the wind.
