How about a hot springs tear tour

Postby milliejohn » Wed Mar 27, 2013 3:45 pm

I know the wife and I enjoy visiting the many natural hot springs we are blessed to live near, how many of you would like to do an informal hot springs tear tour of the eastern sierra's in California central to Mammoth Lakes? Another would be a soak and sites trip from Reno to Austin to Tonopah and back to Reno in Nevada? Some dirt roads, primitive disbursed camping, no services for extended sections, and most natural hot springs are clothing optional for the most part.

That sounds like a GREAT time to us! We visited some springs back in the day when our kids where young in central NV, backroads camping, and had a great time. We would be on board, depending on the schedule, of course.

I guess by the lack of response that it wasn't a good idea, oh well,

if it isn't active, and this one is not, I have no reason to contribute, only a handful of posters since I joined the whole forum

I've stayed here a couple of times (family reunions.) The campground is OK (there's a nearby railway with traffic a couple of times a day) and the water is NICE. Several pools/hot tubs with a variety of temperatures to suit practically everyone.

This forum is fairly active, maybe not this thread. People are busy with life, so sometimes only get on here once a week. Post to this thread a few times and that will get people to read it and think about it. Don't just give up if a whole bunch of people don't respond right away.

There is a whole lot more to this forum than just the South West section. Maybe post your topic in the General section, that one is a lot more active.

I personally like that there is not a bunch of activity. I think a lot of information would get missed that way and it would be very hard to keep up with. In my opinion this is the best forum that I have been a part of.

These are just a small sample of the many hot springs that could be visited, along with rockhounding, gthosttowns, indian rock art, geocaching, and more.

I am making a run out HWY 50 from Dayton to Austin the 24th-28 of April, 2013 if someone wants to tag along, stops at Middlegate and Cold Springs and overnight at Spencer Hot Springs, expect cold nights as mostly above 5000 feet elevation.

For many people, those dates are just too close to the dates of the Dam Gathering, THE event of the year for the NorCAl area. That starts on May 1st (or before, for some). But, your trip does sound interesting and those pictures are tantalizing! Thanks for posting the idea.

When is the best time to go to these hot springs? Is it mostly a spring and fall trek? Where are they all? Is there a map or website that people can look at that helps them find and get to these hot springs? Are there campgrounds nearby all of them or at least some of them? What kinds of facilities do those campgrounds have?

If campgrounds and facilities are needed, these are not the tours to take, most of the primitive hot springs are just that, primitive, you bring everything you need with you, and please take everything including trash with you when you leave. Leave No Trace is the order of the day, and cell phones and wifi seldom get a signal, as for the hot springs in a state,

Nevada Blue is the reason for this trip, once a year high up in Lander County.

Since I needed to look it up, here is a website that explains a little about Nevada Blue, for others to see:
