I-80 West to IRG

Postby danlott » Sat Jun 21, 2014 4:18 pm

Who is traveling on I-80 going west to IRG? What is your planned route and when do you plan on arriving at IRG?

Our planned route right now is I-80 to Reno, 395 north to Susanville, 36 west to Pamplin Grove. Not sure when our arrival time will be.

I have heard towing over 36 to IRG is not recommended. Narrow, twist and slow. It is also not recommended to try and turn left into entrance to the park. Lots of logging trucks bombing down the road.

just to let you know I've heard the same about 36 and how primitive it is, but if you go to Redding and take 299 west, it's a good road all the way to Eureka. It winding, very scenic but has been improved on with climbing lanes - straightened corners - just made much better since I drove it the first time in 1972, was very impressed with how much better it was in 2003 when I drove it last. From Eureka, south just a few miles than back on 36 from the west end which I am told this will feed you in to the campgrounds from the right direction. Have been told from the east you have to go past the grounds westbound a ways, than get turned back around for entrance into the campgrounds eastbound. It's more miles but sounds like less of a hassle than using 36. Just a thought. Take care and enjoy your trip. will be seeing you there. T.Hoefer Camano Island, Wash.

I have travel 36 going to the last two IRG's. It is winding, but not much worse than 299. There is one section that is one lane, but not bad if you do not speed. Also have not had any issues turning into the campground.

I had heard this of 36 when at the Dam get-together this year and you know if I wasn't heading south after IRG, I would be planning on going back home that way. I'll try anything road at least once.(Back side of my trailer - "Wonder'in Aimlessly") 299 in 1972 from Redding to Eureka in my 1965 GTO was a memory from the past that made me re-drive the road in 2003. It was still fun the second time around even driving it in a Suzuki Swift (ala Geo Metro getting 44+MPG) What did blow me away was seeing the "re"building of the freeway end of 299 in 2003 by Eureka - the last time I had been there in 1972 it was just being built! Yes I am getting old!! Have a good trip - see you there!! T.Hoefer

Slow & steady on 36 might just be the way to go ... ... 'cause there's lots of construction going on on 299 west of Redding that has up to 2 hour delays.

Re: turning left into Pamplin Grove ... best to go the 1/4-mile-or-so further west to the old Carlotta Fire Station and turn around there (we "staged" there several years ago, while waiting for them to open the gate).

We'll be coming down from Oregon, this time. See y'All there!

While it may be possible to make the turn into the park coming in from the east on 36, the loaded logging trucks that travel that road make it very hazardous to do so. Please take the extra time to continue west and turn around to approach the park from the west.

I am still making up my mind on going 36. Another route is I-80 through Reno to 20 up near Emigrant Gap, stay on 20 until 101 south of Willits and take 101 to the 36 turnoff just south of Fortuna. It's a beautiful drive and takes about the same time or only slightly longer than the other ways.
