Camping Recommendation

Postby skybear4 » Mon Oct 10, 2016 10:46 am

We are going to be in the Phoenix area the first part of Nov. and are looking for suggestions for camping sites not too far
from the metro area. Have looked at Lost Dutchman SP but would like to maybe find someplace a bit closer to Scottsdale,
etc.

I learned about this site from another member on this forum. It has been invaluable for me in planning trips. http://www.uscampgrounds.info/

Usery Park would be quite a bit closer but still southeast of Scottsdale. There is also 7 Springs camp just above Cave Creek.

I like Coon Bluff a lot! It is just Northeast of Mesa, open for camping October through April (day use only in summer), great for birdwatching, fishing, and seeing wild horses!

Coon Bluff would be great but it seems to be open for camping only prior to holidays.

You're right Mikey! They appear to have changed the rules this year. Last year it was open any night of the week between October 15 and April 15. When they changed the rules, I think that they worded it very poorly on the Forest Service website:

Overnight use will also be allowed on Thanksgiving Day through Saturday night.

I believe that they mean (interpreted from Exemption #5 in this order: http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOC ... 520991.pdf )

Overnight use is allowed on Friday and Saturday nights between October 1 and March 31. In addition, Sunday nights are allowed before the following holidays: ....... Overnight use will also be allowed on Thanksgiving.
