Easter weekend & Lees Ferry

Postby noseoil » Mon Apr 17, 2017 8:50 am

Went to Lees Ferry campground this past weekend & met up with Tony Latham & his wife, Stephanie. Interesting trip & a good time, but I do have a recommendation for everyone. If you're trying to beat the rush hour traffic in Phoenix, don't forget your trailer keys! We got on the road early, but had to double back about 45 minutes out of town to get the trailer keys, then get up to Phoenix in time for prime-time rush hour, a real PITA on any day for towing. All's well that ends well & things smoothed out after that. We had a nice visit with Tony & Steph & their two dogs, one 13 months, one 13 years.

The campground was nice, but the two nights we spent there were like camping in a wind tunnel. I'd estimate gusts at around 30-40 mph on our little hilltop. Our neighbors across the way had their stove blown off the table as they were setting up! The camp is nicely laid out for teardrops, with flush toilets but no showers. No hook-ups, but it was clean & well run. It's a nice place to visit but it will be very warm in the summer, so if you need electricity for air conditioning or cooking, think about going a bit closer to the dam for an RV campground in Page.

Walk in the homestead. The dogs discovered lizards for lots of chase stuff....

Orchard is producing. Apricots should be ready in the next 3 weeks with other fruit later in the season.

We drove through Flagstaff on our way home & weren't prepared for the cold. About 30 degrees camping in the morning, Brrrr!!!

The San Francisco peaks still have some snow on top, so did our camp area. We camped off of fr 164C, a beautiful area in the national forest. Take highway 180 out of Flagstaff on the way to the Grand Canyon & there are plenty of spots to camp for free. It's still closed north of 180 but should be opening in the next couple of weeks. There's a nice spot off of fr 151 we usually camp in, but it's still closed for the winter.
