The newly constructed Pfeiffer Canyon bridge has opened allowing more access to CA Highway One along the Big Sur, California coastline.

Good to hear on the new bridge. Isn't there an unpaved route to get around the southern closure? It seems like I read something on that but I can't find the information now.

Not according to http://www.bigsurcalifornia.org/highway_conditions.html which shows current information about Big Sur roads that are open or closed.

The nearly mile wide Mud Creek slide blocks the southern entry to Big Sur on Calif. Hwy. One. This section of Hwy. One probably won't reopen until rebuilding is completed sometime late in 2018.

The alternate south easterly route to Big Sur from US Highway 101 is the Nacimiento Ferguson Road from King City or the Bradley area.

We have been planning a teardrop trip to Big Sur in March 2018. The new floods/mudslides etc. have given us pause. Any advice from the locals would be appreciated.

Check www.bigsurcalifornia.org for current road and camping conditions. bigsurcalifornia.org/highway_conditions. It's wise to make camping reservations ASAP.

To get to Big Sur you'll need to drive south on Calif. Hwy. One from Monterey and Carmel north of Big Sur. You cannot drive on Hwy. One all the way from Carmel to Cambria because of the massive Mud Creek landslide area road reconstruction which probably will continue until late summer in 2018.

Kirk Creek campground situated on a cliff side terrace overlooking the Pacific Ocean is sprctacular! If you can get a reservation plan to there a day or longer.

Hope you have a great time!

Congratulations on snagging a Kirk Creek campsite!

The Big Sur Guide can help you plan your visit: http://www.bigsurcalifornia.org/pdf/big ... 016-17.pdf
The bigsurvisitorguide.com has very useful information, maps, and helpful links to many other Big Sur area websites.

If you want to explore the southern Big Sur area for another day, or more, you may enjoy camping at Paskett Creek campground, on the inland side of Hwy. 1. You can walk to beautiful Sand Dollar Beach from there.

Reserved Plaskett Creek before I saw your recommendation. Sounds like i got lucky! California State Parks reservations not quite so easy but finally got something at Sunset Beach Campground.

Thanks for all your help! Looking forward to getting out of the rain for a while.
