Doug Hodder update

Postby tupelosue » Thu Feb 15, 2018 1:11 pm

Many of us go way back with Doug Hodder, but I know he hasn’t been active here for quite a long time.

Doug was diagnosed with cancer last year, and has been going thru treatment in Sacramento and San Francisco.
I’ve just heard that Doug is now home (not at his, but with a family member) and now on hospice.

I visited him recently and he was too weak to barely even talk. I wanted to let the teardrop family know, as he has been such an important part of this world. He has helped me over the years with little teardrop fixes, learning how to make waffle dogs, and so much more.

I hope that folks can share memories or stories here, and maybe I or someone might be able to share them with Doug.

Hard to believe that it has been over 13 years ago that the hubs talked me into driving to an unknown place (Swimmers Delight) towing our new trailer to meet up with a bunch of people he met on the internet. We arrived in the dead of night and were greeted with dinner and a whole bunch of new friends. That was the night that we met Doug and Dean and Joanie and Sue and Lee and Courtney and Roy! What a fantastic ride it has been. I have copied so many cool ideas for our trailer from Doug it should have his name on it to give credit where credit is due. Campfires will not be the same without his wry sense of humor and quick wit.

I never met Doug in person. We talked on the phone a couple times years ago and emailed back when I found an old Camp stove that I thought would be a good fit for his museum. It was nice to send it where it belonged. His restoration job on that old stove was amazing, as were his trailer builds. The quality of his trailers pushed me to be better. Doug's ability to guide the beginners through a build or restoration of a trailer with patience was special. I have met and made so many friendships on this board in the last 10 years. While I did not get to meet Doug personally I did get to know him and consider him a friend. It's sad to be writing this down, because it's to soon to say goodbye to a great guy.

:( It seems like many people are writing about Doug as if he is gone already. He's still with us; and, who knows? He just might surprise us and make a come back and we can call him the Come Back Kid! Anyway, I hope he does. He is a jewel among men and teardrop/vintage trailer builders.

My great grandmother used to say "The Lord won't have me and the Devil can't keep me; so, I gotta stay on the earth." She lived to be 96. I'd like to see Doug live that long, with good health. That's my wish for him. <3 & OOOOO

Such sad news. As an early member of the forum it was always a joy to follow Doug and his creative mind when he started one of his teardrop projects. He inspired many of us to step out of the rut and go a step beyond. I will miss him and his battles with campground raccoons and reviving ancient camping equipment.

So sad to hear! I have been wondering where Doug had disappeared to off of the Forum.
His builds were all outstanding and he set the bar very high for those who were building their trailers at the same time.
Would have (and maybe will again) loved to had a waffle dog cook off with him while camping.
Last time I saw Doug was the IRG when he awarded me my waffle dog patch!
Wish him all the best!

Damn, Doug.
Thoughts and best wishes aren’t nearly enough. Can I offer you some lightly used bone marrow?

When a person thinks about the teardrop and small trailer revival, Doug is one of the names that comes to mind. He always had something new going on to carry everyone forward. So sorry to hear the news and prayers are offered in keeping up the fight.

I met Doug at the 2013 Dam Gathering and again at the 2014 IRG (around the BBQ pit among other places). A talented and funny guy - I enjoyed his wry wit.

When I first joined this forum and was in need of advise, Doug was the first to answer. He talked me into coming to his home and to spend a day at an IRG. I can personally say he is one of the kindest persons I've ever met. His craftsmanship is top notch.
My thoughts are with you Brother, win this battle.

Doug has been a good friend to Jane & I over the years.
We would stop by his home on our trips to Yosemite, what a great guy  .
I had no idea he was suffering with cancer, I wish him god's speed to recovery.

Here's a couple pictures from his shop.
