What about the exterior?

Again baltic birch Ply.

A friend recommend Shellac. Cut 50/50

You need some kind of uv barrier. To keep the woody look on mine. I used marine varnish.

Rose has spar varnish. She's 11 years old, and has been touched up twice in that time. Garage kept for storage.
Holy cow, Rose is a teenager now! Done? Surely you jest. A teardrop is never "done".

And I'm betting you didn't buy the cheapest stuff on the shelf.

What brand?

After going to every place I could in Southern California I was finallyy directed (By the staff at Anderson Plywood) to use:

General Finishers
Exterior 450 (Satin).

He said most Marine Spar Varnish can not be sold in California.

Any comments before I start?

Is it oil based? When I lived down there I used water based polyurethane helsman? Moved to Washington, it's oil based and seems better.

I have used Oil Bases Helmsman on a wooden canoe and it held up better than I would have guessed it would. I was impressed

Epifanes is the only varnish that holds up in the Arizona sun. It will be the only thing I will be using after I finish up the Helmsman Spar that I now have. Left outdoors the Helmsman needs repair after one year.
