Camping near Colorado Springs

Postby Kevin & Sandy » Mon Jul 15, 2019 2:47 pm

We are taking the grandkids to Colorado Springs, plan to take the teardrop and a tent for "overflow". I bet grandpa and the boys get that!
Anyway, we would like to get out in the mountains/woods a little, and don't really want a KOA or something like that. (Don't want a parking lot where I sit between huge campers.)

Can anybody help with some ideas on where to camp?

I have a Honda Pilot and a really low slung teardrop, so I am a little leery about rough fire roads...

The fire roads I used to take into the city (from the West) disappeared in the wild fires a few years ago, so beware of the DeLorme or on-line maps if they haven't been updated.

I'd make reservations ASAP for that area! So many folks from CS and Denver, it can be difficult finding developed camping spots.

Not sure what the Forest Service rules for dispersed camping in that area are these days.

Heard about this campground and seems a good place for kids. We've been planning to visit Colorado Springs and thought to have at least a night of camping for the kids. Got to finish first the installation of the new brake kit, atv shocks and tires on the current TRX project before we can see how much days we have after the family reunion there.

there are several NFCG's north of Divide on lesser butt maintained roads

IIRC they are all 1st come 1st served

don't forget Cripple Creek & Victor(lotsa history there)

Cripple Creek has turned into a gambling town and casinos frequently have great meal deals/buffets on the cheap

there used2waz a deep mine tour in Cripple Creek that took you 1000' DOWN into the mine(Molly Kathleen)

HAVE FUN

I would reccommend Meuller State Park. Should be no trouble with the roadway.

The Air Force Academy is just outside Colorado Springs. There is a FamCamp on the grounds. It is wonderful! If you are retired military or an active officer will sponsor you, you can reserve a spot. My wife and I have camped there several times when my son was in the academy. Price is reasonable.

Thanks all for the great suggestions, we wound up staying at the Crags Campground. Nice, quiet, with a stream running right next to several of the sites. Small parking pads for the sites, so TD's are perfect for this. The kids had fun exploring and hiking. :)

We arrived mid morning on Thursday and there were only a couple spots left, but we had Thunder Ridge and Mueller as a backup. Sorry no pics, I have several pics of the kids and hiking, but none with the TD in it!
