Canoe carrying option

Postby Ranger Rod » Wed Mar 23, 2005 9:30 pm

I've been trying to find a viable solution for towing a TD with my pickup and also carrying two canoes or kayaks. Seemed that most of the racks for pickups use up the 2" receiver for the rack.

I got a Northern tool catalog the other day that has what looks like a good solution. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=492929&R=492929
With that you could use a Yakima Dry Dock or similar.

I think that will do the trick for me.

I thought about putting racks on my TD and hauling my kayaks on it. There is another member that does this, and has some pics, but I can't remember who it is. The only problem with that is you might not be able to open the kitchen hatch without unloading the boats.

If you are hauling the boats on the pick-up, you might also try a rack like a contractor hauls ladders with.

I made a rack for my pick-up to haul my kayaks while pulling my 5th wheel.

Just put a rack on my 10 ft tear for my 9 1/2 ft kayak. Can still open hatch with boat in place. Just have to undo rear tiedown. Will attempt to post picture.

I had thought about a contractor type rack but I have a hard "lid" on my truck & prefer to keep it on.

A while back... I think it was Grant that posted a link to a real neat set of racks for canoes and kayaks that were not only side loading, but they scissored down from the roof area giving you a lower loading and unloading height and it solved the problem with the rear hatch all together. They might have had the word Talon in the name.

And of course the other big two manufactures have the same thing. Thule 897 Hullavator and Yakima EZ-Load. They are neat products and makes it alot eaiser to load and unload. There is going to be one of these in my future.

Rod:
I have exactly the same setup. I have a pickup with a decklid. I've been considering the exact same solution, that double receiver thing. Given that both the teardrop and the canoe rack are pretty light-duty, I'll bet it'll work great.
