That I didn't want to upset Juneaudave.

I'm not sure what his point was either.

Ira: I know of four uses for grommets that I would bet put a lot more strain on the item than a drainhole in a shade canopy. One of them is in silk camisole/corsets. One of them is in ripstop backpacks. One of them is in hi-performance kites. One of them is in camping hammocks.

Okay--I'm gonna go back and read it five more times, and if I still don't get it, I'll be back to beg for a hint.

As far as the grommets go though, I don't think strain is the issue. I didn't know if they would connect to this fabric, but like I said, I don't know squat about them.

However, judging by where the water collects, I would have to put the holes too far in, and I wouldn't water dripping in there. So I definitely want a solution where I can route the water away.

Here ya go Ira, I think this is what you are trying to do. I don't know if they sell the drains seperate. But here's some food for thought.

Ira the gromets that you add on any material looks just like the gromets already on the edge of the blue tarp that you buy. Hope that help you.

tried to insert a picture but forgot how to do it.

They only sell it with the tarps--not the piece itself.

And Arthur, I understand the grommet thing. It's a matter of needing something with a fitting that I can attach a hose to.

And okay--I'm begging. I STILL don't get the joke.

Ira, go to any boating store and get a fitting that goes through the hull and hooks to a hose. They are usually made of nylon and would work just fine for what you are trying to do.

We had a similar problem, too. In a hard rain, it was miserable trying to get the water off the top and not take a shower at the same time. Not to mention the fact that the smallest amount of rain would usually come thru the fabric and get you wet anyway.

However, I got a couple of cans of spray-on stuff (can't remember what it was but I got it at a camping store) that you put on tent seams to keep up the waterproofing after the tent has got some age on it and after about 3 coats of the stuff (2 wasn't enough) on the top of the EZ-Up, the water doesn't accumulate hardly at all. I guess making the top waterproof (or nearly waterproof) meant that the water simply rolled off and didn't stretch the fabric enough to create the ponds in the corners.

There are about six ways this can be done. My favorite is Camp ADK's solution -- that shade they use is shaped to shed water.

Grommet kits are $4 at Wally World, and for $6 more you can get three "replacement" shock-corded fiberglas poles and a ball of good nylon twine.

So what I would do is assemble the poles and slip them inside the EZUp frame and draw them to a "bow" shape and tie them in place. That way you don't have to make holes in your fabric.

Ira, are you old enough to remember "Wagon Train"? Think of the supports for the wagon tops!!
