Awning?

Postby Nic » Tue Aug 29, 2006 6:46 am

Im wanting to build an awning the lenght of my camper for the door side and a small one for my side window. I have come up with an idea of how i would attach it to my camper with the use of those metal circles found on tarps or with straps. Before i start i wanted to see if anyone has done this. I would like to be able to take it off and put it on when im at camp. And i would like the system used to attach it to be made without any RV type parts. Any pictures or ideas would be great. Thanks .
Im not lazy. I just hang out a lot.

Use some "J" shaped hooks on the top edge spaced to fit rings in tarps and make some two piece poles out of one inch pvc pipe, coupler and end caps with a bolt through the end.

Why not just get a decent-size EZ-Up?
Here we go again!

Check out Ross Wade teardrop. It has gone through a few changes but he had a side room that was made of conduit that fliped of the roof and an umbrella for the top. I couldn't find any pictures but I'm sure they are out there. Also, EZ up's are common. We have a 6x6x7 side room with our Little Guy and also use a 10x10 or 12x12 of the other side.
Good luck deciding on what to do?

We use a 10x10 EZ up at the side of tear for living room and curtain off a corner of it for changing/potty area. Screens in summer and solid sides when cold. I use the hooks and tarp thing over the gakkey area when raining or need the shade.

Nic...If you want a vintage awning...unless you are planning on sewing it up yourself...awning shops will have striped Sunbrella...like Josephs...a scalloped edge looks really good...and it's tough stuff...Doug

YES! Like THAT! Only on the side. Is it made of canvas? If so did you treat it for water or anything special?

Yup i was plannig on doing any sewing myself. Only im thinking fringe instead of the scalloped edge. (not as hard to do) I think im for sure going to use that pole and rode idea. ANd the "J" hooks sound like a good way to attach it to the camper. I may go to the mall (lowes) and see what i can find.

It's made of vinyl-coated canvas and I got it from Canvas Replacements for about $150 with a set of two poles and ropes included. Frankly, I don't think I could buy the fabric for that price, never mind the aggravation of putting the thing together. They do really top-notch work! You can get any size you like, any color you like. It's mounted on 3/8"aluminum awning rail which you can get at most RV repair shops.
