Door rain guards - and door stops

Postby beverlyt » Tue Apr 27, 2004 4:58 am

Mike,
Seems to me awhile back on the other forum, someone showed a pic of some gizmo they use to hold the doors from hitting the side of the trailer. Do you have a pic?
I don't know how long those belt straps we're using will hold up.
And about those door rain guards. Are they really that necessary?

Rain guards? You mean the drip edge molding right? Like in this pic?

Yes, I think it's necessary. A lot of water runs down the side of the teardrop, and this forces the water past the door. Otherwise, you'll be relying on your door weatherstripping to do it all, and if it doesn't you'll end up with a wet mattress.

Gizmo, are you talking about this thing?

Do a search on ebay for rv door holder.

I bought the 6" ones, and they are too long. I'm going to see if the guy will trade me for some 4" ones.

Thanks Mike. I just ordered the rv door holders off Ebay, 4" size.
Next we'll figure something about about those rain guards. Right now we're working on getting the last of the thick aluminum we bought around the side edges of the hatch cover....NOT FUN!!!

Beverly: alternatively, you could try Grant Whipp's method: trim the aluminum to the edge of the hatch cover. Then cut a strip of aluminum to fit the space between the edge of the hatch cover and the outer hatch rib on each side. Cover the edge of the hatch with insert (or edge) molding riveted into place and appropriate caulking applied. Add weatherstripping on underside to cover rivets.

Somebody probably has a drawing of this...

Yea, I'd need a drawing to understand that one tonight! I'm too tired to understand any words.

Here you go. Larry S. posted this a few days ago. Grant told him how to do it.

Are you sure that's what Rik meant?

Yeah, that's close enough.

The piece of filon right above the weatherstripping could be an aluminum strip. Rivet through the whole lid (aluminum strip, plywood, aluminum skin, insert edge molding) and cover the rivet heads on the top side with the vinyl insert in the insert edge molding (instead of the angle edging shown in the drawing).

That way you don't have to try to bend the aluminum around the hatch edge which is what I thought Beverly was struggling with.
