It's time for a new Generic Standy Design...

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

It would be possible to sew some screen into the window spaces and have a plastic flap too when needed ... All in what you need ...

I think we might be on to something it it is definitely outside the box thinkin
I just want something that a bike can haul , I dont mind a little setup I just would like a standy that would fit within my slipstream and provided adequate shelter on those not so good days without the closed in feeling and no more sleeping on the ground

is that to much to ask for
There is a world, just beyond now,
where reality runs a razor thin seam between fact and possibility;

Anywhere I roam where I lay my head is home....

GPW, got your message ...

Would the roof be hardsided with fabric sides?
From a simplicity standpoint an angled roof like a VW camper would require less bows / HW, meaning less overall weight and expense than a straight up roof like pictured earlier.

If you go the angled roof route, it could be deisgned to use an off the shelf replacement VW camper canvas.

Flaps on the outside with straight zipper are easy to do. Down side is having to go outside to up/close them. A normal production approach is "cutting in" the windows, then adding a flap to cover the zippers. More work and hard for a first time sewer to get right. The main thing to watch is not to have seams that catch water.

This may move away from some of the key design criteria for a "Standie", but here is where my thinking is for having a standup area.

A trailer box in the 4' - 5' height range with some cool styling, that is a "rear loader" where the back wall folds up forming a roof that a tent systems drops down from forming the standup area. Here is a few examples ...

Hmmm, a Softopper like design would work for having the whole roof go up.

Hmmm ???? Travel cover... How about a snap on Tonneau cover like the pickups have ... seems to work for them ... Maybe something that would flip over the side or back and make an awning of sorts ... ???

OUCH !!! Almost 700USD for a Softopper (8' bed) ... :o Not bad really in the Truck world (My fiberglas Camper top set me back about Twice that much) ... :o ... Not bad really if you're spending several K on a Nice TD ...
Thinking some of the more talented/creative members might want to make their own ...

Yes a snap on cover would work nicely. All the parts are available for fabbing your own, althought the sewing is a bit tricky.

From an easy of buildability standpoint I would be leaning torwards an angled roof like a VW camper. The lift system and sewing would be straightforward compared to a Softopper style roof.

Schaney , you do have CONSIDERABLY more experiences with these things ... So I take it this soft top as a bad idea ... Oh well !!! Forget that !!!

Mike, for a while there it looked like Big Pink was going to be a new Standy .... What happened ?? That would have been cool , and I had some design ideas to present to you for further "modeling" of the shape (thinking something like a "bumper car",remember those ?) ... Lots of cool things you can do with foam ...how about a fabric covered Roswell ?? Standy ... :o
