I use a 4 cup Mr Coffee. We use one of those tiny bungee cords to secure it to the pot when traveling. I haven't broke it yet.

I must admit, I am seriously considering getting one now! ;) It looks like it will work really well, and I like the fact that the clean up is super easy. I always hated cleaning the filter on the french press. I am a big fan of americanos, so this looks like it might work out quite nicely. BTW, how do you do a triple in that thing?

One scoop = single

two scoops = double

three scoops = triple

Increase water accordingly

The concentrate since it has been filtered will keep at room temp for some time and hot water added for an Americano later. Makes an excellent latte and well as a macchiato or capp.

Drink the concentrate for an expresso strength coffee.

Actually I love strong coffee so I normally do a double for an Americano

I use a percolator similar to Mary K's it does have the glass top so that I can see when it is boiling. Here is how I do it.

1. I use a rough cut grind.
2. I found some filters for the cage at a local grocery store.
3. I fill the water up to about an inch under the coffee basket.
4. I fill the coffee basket up about 2/3 leaving enough space for the filter.
5. When I get the water to a boil, I lower the temp slightly so that it is not an agressive boil.
6. I use the glass top and stop when it is the color that I like it.

The coffee is not bitter and I can drink it with out sugar (my perfered addiviive). I have even blown away more than one Seattle coffee snob using those methods. It only takes a little bit of prep and a little bit of technique.

I have the same exact percolator as MaryK as well, but I guess I have been doing it wrong. I think I am doing two things wrong: wrong grind for the coffee, and I am just not good at seeing when it is done. I just can't seem to tell when the color is just right.

dreadcptflint, what type of filter did you use for it? I didn't know there were paper filters that you could use in it. I'll have to try your suggestions and see if I can get a better brew with it.

Geron, I ended up purchasing the Aeropress. I'm anxious to try it out. Should get it in about a week.

With a little experimentation I think you'll like it...

My experimentation led me to home roasting my own coffee.

Yea, I got it bad. Check my signature ;)

I carry a 50's Kitchen Aid coffe grinder and use the cheepest coffee pot that Walmart sells. The latest one is a $5 one out of the box sale. I think the coffee is the most important and then the machine.

When there is no plugin I use the inverter for the grinder and the camp pot on the gas stove.

You know what I'm thinking. I think at a teardrop gathering in the future their needs to be a brew off. Like someone said, there are so many ways to make coffee. It would be a good early morning activity and you get to drink the results. I just wish this had come up a few weeks ago because my season is just about over.

You know that might be fun at a gathering. Some of us non-coffee drinkers would just have to suffer with our own hot beverage of choice.

You could add to it a bakeoff with dutch over breakfast rolls. Has anyone done cinnamon rolls in a dutch oven?

For years I made "cowboy coffee" which is simply loose grounds boiled in the pot. (The stuff about adding cold water is nonsense - the grounds sink to the bottom on their own and are no problem until the last couple of cups.) Now I use the same system as Mary K, though I fill the pot and put in two filter packs - Maxwell House seems to be the only one making them. Anyway, after Kate and I have a couple of cups to pry our eyes open, the rest goes into a stainless steel Thermos rather than have to keep firing up the stove to re-heat it.

BILLYL you said that you have a stove top expresso maker, Do you know the make? I would love to bring mine but don't ussually have 120vac when camping. I have a serious coffee addiction. I use the coleman drip coffee maker with the tear. I added a reusable filter. the fine mesh type. adds to taste imoa. Any info on the expresso maker would be great

Coffee - one of my favorite subjects

Postby Suzan » Sat Oct 06, 2007 9:09 am

Hi all,

I am a coffee fanatic, and have tried many coffees, and many brewing methods.

At home I grind my beans and use a Frieling stainless steel French Press. I purchased it from amazon.com. A little pricey, but it keeps the coffee hot, and it is made very well. I'm sure it would work fine on the road, except for messy cleanup.

IMO, the best coffee in the world is Intelligentsia's Black Cat Blend. It is available for purchase online: http://www.intelligentsiacoffee.com

Intelligentsia coffee is roasted and shipped within one day, so it's very smooth and flavorful. The only problem with it is once you try it, you can never go back to drinking swill!

When I travel, I use a Melitta drip filter cone with unbleached filters only, and a sturdy mug. It works just fine, though the end result is not as good as a French Press.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Aero Press.

I have my eye on a manual travel burr coffee grinder sold here: http://www.espressoparts.com/product/CLIP_TGR_SM
It comes in a larger size too, but since I'm the only coffee drinker, the small size would be perfect for road trips.

Happy sipping or gulping!

I bring my own grinder (not a chopper) and use Trader Joe's French Roast. I have a nice tea kettle from Costco that heats up quickly and used that for drip coffee..... that was until last Christmas.

My brother gave me a Starbucks Barista Solo. It makes one 16 oz cup of coffee very quickly and very tasty. It is the kitchen at home and also travels with me, most of the time I have shore power. I love it.

Now a word of praise for Starbucks.
I used the Barista for four months, at home and on the road. One day at a dog show it just quit. I did not have a receipt, box or anything so I stowed it in the garage. One hot day while ordering a frappacino I asked about warranty stuff and got a phone number which I lost in my desk clutter.
Five months later I found it and on a boring day I called.
This was the best service for a broken device I have ever used.
I explained about the lack of receipt etc... no problem. I described the unit which the young lady confirmed and then took all my personal data, including the location of a couple nearby Starbucks. A few days later a Warranty rep called. There was a replacement unit at the nearest Starbucks, all I had to do was take in my old one including the cup.
Done deal and this service was outstanding.
I did have to listen to an respond to a telephone survey rating the service, the survey was hosted by the Boss of Starbucks. Happy to oblige.

Susan,

I've had my eye on that grinder as well in lieu of the Zassenhaus.

A coffee nut as well here's my order of preference in brewing technique

Aero press
Aero press inverted
French press
Melitta Cone Drip #2
Bunn Drip
Bialetta Stove top espresso pot -- dislike the cleanup!!

After that it doesn't seem to matter.
