QUESTIONABLE EBAYER...........PICS

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Postby Denny Unfried » Wed Feb 02, 2005 7:05 pm

Hey, what's with this joker selling plans on a CD? He copied the build pics & comments from my web site, put them on a CD with several others and is selling it as plans on Ebay. Apparently he can't read the copyright notice at the bottom and now I'm getting emails from buyers of the CD asking questions on how to built it with a complete set of plans.

Denny.. maybe you made a mistake putting this at the bottom of your page...

"In keeping with the spirit of the Internet
and WWW, any content on this site may be
freely used and copied to Personal web sites with
no restrictions.....................Thanks - Denny Unfried"

He must have taken that to heart...er expanded that to mean "copied to a CD which I will sell and make money from your efforts"

While on the topic of your site Denny, did you write your photo album code or is that a script you found somewhere. It's perty slick!

Thanks Dave. I never even imagined anyone would ever copy this stuff for profit. 'Guess I should change the start page with some sort of disclaimer but the barn door's closed now. I answer email questions almost every night from as far away as New Zealand but this is crazy. I'm furnishing the information and this PIRATE is collecting the bread but he's the type that's probably never picked up a screwdriver in his life.

Most of the slide show is from a program although it helps to have a knowledge of Style sheets to modify things to suit.

Great idea, could just take all the comments and dimmensions off the site and just build the trailers which I'm doing anyway.

Copying someone's website and selling it on eBay is really tacky... I can't fathom someone doing that.

Maybe you should put a statement on the front page of your site simply stating your site was copied to CD and is now being sold without your permission on some CD being distributed on eBay. For any and all support please call the %$#@&*^ pirate who sold you the CD. Then perhaps the buyers will start giving negative feedback to the eBay commmunity about this guy.

It is one thing to gather information and write a guide - it is quite another to simply lift in totality the content.

EDITED NOTE: I just went to my site and put up copyright notices.... Seems silly but now seems necessary.

Denny,
I would ask the people that are contacting you to give you the name of the pirate. No name, no help. They probably have some sort of reciept with a person's name like what PayPal does.

Stolen plans/ stolen photos

Postby doug hodder » Wed Feb 02, 2005 11:48 pm

My completed boat got ripped off and is on the home page of a web site in Holland, www.aquarius-zelfbouwboten.com/ Yeah, it kind of gets one cranky after you put the work into it and some low life steals your work to make his $$. Doug Hodder :x

Wow....and on the start page to boot.
Have you ever gotten a translation of the descriptive text below the picture?
I wasn't able to make out any mention of your name and it's certainly not Winkekwagen.
Anyone know what a Winkelwagen is?

Nope, and if you put 'winkelwagen' into the new Dutch-English Babel Fish translator, you get 'winkelwagen'!

The rest of the (semi-)translated text under the photos of Doug's Malahini says:

"Malahini How also, you weet certainly that you will get much bekijks and compliments for your fantastic ship.

The generous dimensions of the tank of the Malahini and the modular meetings, make it possibly almost each interieur coordinate design on your wishes are based on can become for example removed for a large tank with sleep possibilities at creeren, or rug-aan-rug are placed, so that the water opening behind you can be watched.

Beautiful V in the front with the broad keel, the Malahini make discharge-disposed, dry and safe boat. The firm construction has been built and other one at "can".

The design has been aimed at the amateur boat builder. Gedetaillerde drawings, an inch by inch guide and photograph ensure that you can collectors build boat for a very reasonable price. Dimensions: Length 4.85 mtr. breadth 2.06 mtr. weight 220 kilogrammes 4 up to 5 persons You can click for dimensions drawing, foto`s and further information."
Yeah, OK, it might be losing a little something in the translation!

They are strange folk, the Dutch - I think they are probably the most civilised, decent people on earth, but in business ethics, particularly with foreigners, they do occasionally lapse big time.

Doug, have Glen-L not taken an interest in this? These guys seem to be re-selling the Glen-L plans for 180 Euros, about $240 - three times the original price!

If the crook was not probably lurking on this site I would say contact him and invite him to Minden. See if he would like to set up a table and sell his "wonderful CD". Once he gets set up "send the boys around". I'll grab a couple of old feather pillows and warm up the tar.
Or you could contact the bidders listed on ebay and tell them where to get all the info for free. Cut him out of the deal altogether.

I'd report him. A quick scan of the ebay user-agreement would indicate that he is violating the agreement. See section 9 at http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/user-agreement.html

Hey, thanks again Dave and you did some ground work for me. I was also going to contact him informing of his infringement of copyright since there are several sites on his CD.

I have also contacted buyers of the CD who are disappointed in the lack of content and informed them that the information is available directly from the web sites free/gratis in better quality and much more complete.

This is crazy! First Dennys teardrop, and then Doug boat. Gee, next it'll be Kevin's Cubby plans, and then, someone will steal this whole website and try to sell it? :x
