General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Thanks to everyone for their help. This is an example of how people working together - worldwide, even - can get things done. Perhaps the forum should run for President. No, wait . . . never mind. Then everything would have to go to committee, and we would have people who would censor us . . . no, wait! We have that here already, don't we? lol Anyway, Heikki, I will probably call upon you to do that. Lemme check with the wife (post-nap) and I will let you know.

A grateful Tear Fan :)

ClassicFinn,

How do they attach these tents to the tear/trailer/van? I know the standard way is to use a rope slider where a canvas tent with a rope on the one end slides into the slider on the trailer, but in these two photos it is quite obvious that this (traditional) method was not used.

I am curious as to how the side tent is attached, as this is a potential spot for leaking to occur, and if you have a water leak between your tent and trailer, it becomes very uncomfortable.

Good Morning Barrie
Yes the connection in that area is a so called welt to prevent the water coming in. and the special moulding on the vehicle itself.

Its called a KEDERADAPTER SET in German.

Image

Image

Its just difficult to see it but most definitley its there.

Image

And as my tear its all covered as well, no water gets in between. Here is the moulding I used.

Image

and to seal the underneath part of the moulding here is the rubber moulding or gasket made specifically for it.

Image
and on the inner side of the rubber gasket is the butyl tape all in one.

Image

Also the tents in the pics above are self standing. All kinds of adapters are made for the vehicles and caravans. 8) 8)

And no water inside. Also available are the rain gutters to install to the mouldings. As well as End Caps.

Image

Image

Hope that helped you some. Any other info you need just ask. Dont I sound like a Caravan parts salesman..   Im not Ive just studied these things now for a few years. :D :D

Heikki,

Wow, that was a fast reply! But of course we are awake while the Americans are still sleeping!

Thanks for the great information. The pictures sure make everything more understandable! (Except that last picture. I don't know how that fits into the puzzle!)

Anyhow, I was hoping that there was another simple way to attach these tents. In my part of the woods these 'rope sliders', as we call them, are INCREDIBLY expensive, because the leading caravan manufacturer manufactures the extrusions too, and they sell it at a high price because there is NO competition.

But thanks again for the info. At least my curiosity has been satisfied!

Hi Barrie

That moulding is quite expensive here as well, especially the aluminum moulding however I didnt buy it at wholsale which Im still intending on doing. Meaning getting it at wholesale if I make more of these lil tears.

Barrie there is another way of installing them. Much cheaper and I,ll post the info in a bit.

And the rain gutter works the same way. So please stay tuned to this thread . These parts are from the same company that sells the tents as well and other misc. products for camping.

Best regards

Ok Barrie here is another way of setting up the awning or tent. Making up a tent or awning to your specific needs. By individual poles. There is just hundreds of different lengths and corner pieces to choose from. 8)

Image

Using either plastic or metall pieces. Such as below.

Here is another example how to do it.

The above is handy if you want to make your own awning instead.

By the way our friend Gage has a nice tent or awning as well. 8) 8) Maybe he,ll show his Barrie. ;)

Thanks, but no thanks! The shipping alone would cost me the same as the tear! (I am situated in South Africa).

Heikki, Thanks again for all the info! If you ever lose your job you could become a caravan salesman. It seems that you're a natural at it!  ;)
