Removeable lower galley?

Postby OzarkWonder » Tue Feb 01, 2005 2:10 pm

Newbie from Missouri. Thinking about design.
Already had some help from Uncle Denny (Thanks!).

I am thinking of building a wider (54" interior) Comet.
I would like to make the lower galley removeable so I can also haul some 4x8 material with the trailer.
I saw a web site that did this but now I cannot find it.

I'll probably attach supports to the wall from the floor to the upper shelves which will also act as a stop from the lower galley.

Any structural issues?

Any ideas on what to use to secure the lower galley that would be quick-release?

I'll probably build a platform in the garage on which to park the lower galley so I can move it in and out without lifting.

So any devices or designs to make the sliding and alignment easier?

Thanks!

Shouldn't be too difficult. Just build a self-contained box with drawers that's 1/4 narrower than the inside width of your trailer so that it slides in and out of your galley easily. To hold it in place, I'd use bar latches like these:

that connect it to the rest of the trailer. You can hide them inside the cabinet and have two that keep it from sliding towards the door and two keeping it from jumping vertically.

OzarkWonder - Was this the site?

http://www.retroteardrops.com/

It does seem like a good idea, I wonder why more people don't do this?

There's also this one:

And there used to be one at http://www.droptear.com/ which was the one where the cabinets split and folded in when hauling. But the site isn't there any more

Not the site I saw but I like this one too.
A motorcycle was put into the teardrop on the site I originally saw.

Thanks!

My original galley was removable. A basic plywood box hung on heavy duty full extention slides. It work out well even though I redesigned the galley several times since then. Also note the folding panel on the bulkhead.

Bob, it was seeing your galley a couple of years ago at Sweetwater, that inspired me to build mine the way I did, Thank you. My bulkhead is also in two pieces. Except the lower part does not hinge. It's just held in place with 4 screws. The only way I can get my mattress out is through the rear of the tear.

When I was young my parents had a unique camping tent trailer that had two small hitches spaced the same width as the trailer and a single wheel mounted in the middle of the trailer. The "Galley" would slide out of the trailer and stand on its own 4 legs. For those who need additional sleeping space, having a slide-out galley on legs would do the trick.

Although my galley isn't going to be removable per se, I do want to make it so I can easily disassemble it because I want to have a real mattress in the cabin and going through the galley is the only way I can see to get it in there.

I did mine with half and half. can't put 4x8 sheets in but regular 8' lumber will fit. back of galley has sliding door into cabin behind the cooler. ulterior motive is I won't have to break down my flyrod to take it for fishing. I think it's a great idea to make your tear multi functional. good luck.

The under side of my counter has a dado to accept the bottom bulkhead which has a dado for the vertical divider. Everything under the counter including the bottom bulkhead can be removed with about three screws in less than 10 minutes. Don't know why I did it that way because it isn't wide enough to haul 4' widths of ply and they can be hauled in my pick-up anyway

Thanks Dave. The tail lights are 29-31 Ford tail lights. Got them on line through J C Whitney. Only $19.99 each.
