Where to put the spare?

Postby Erik-the-red » Sat Mar 19, 2005 5:01 pm

I want to avoid putting the teardrop spare tire in the back of the pickup or SUV. Considering that I want to place a storage chest at the intersection of the tongue and front of the teardrop, there's no room there either. I may put a receiver hitch at the back of the tear and fabricate something to attach the spare to, but I'm worried it would make an awful racket while traveling on bumpy roads.

Any suggestions?

I followed the Kuffel Creek plan and mounted mine underneath the TD between the first two cross members. I Keep a scissor jack handy. It would be a great help in getting the tire down off the bolts.

Reinforce the floor with 3/4 inch plywood. Run two 1/2 inch bolts through the floor from the top. Secure with wing nut and cotterpin through the bolt.

I have seen them mounted with U bolts underneath the tongue. I would see that as a possible drag problem.

I went with a can of Fix a flat and omitted the spare. I don't get to far from civilization though.

Since my trailer will be a little larger, I'm raising the bed about 8" to give me a storage area under it big enough for stuff like a spare, a canopy, and other junk.

Tire in the Well

Postby Dee Bee » Sat Mar 19, 2005 6:34 pm

I have made my storage well big enough and deep enough to keep the spare. This will keep it out of the weather, and the weight of the tire will be over the axel. The pic explains it better

The only problem with this approach is that I take my tear on some nasty roads and I'd be concerned that I'd bottom out . . . .on the spare.

The best spare placement

Postby Guy » Sun Mar 20, 2005 3:00 am

The best spare placement I have seen is Marge Foster's. She is the "Old Biti" in the "RVCrazy" show. Her spare rotated out and then folded down to become her dining table. Quite ingenious!

I'm mounting mine today. Front & center standing upright with a Matching hub cap. I built a battery tray that sinks the battery below the toung 5" (still leaving me 10" ground clearance) and the top of the battery is slightly (3/4") above the top of the toung. My buddy did it to his Cub and it really looked great.

I did the easy thing the spare for all the cars are the same as the tear so all I have to do is pop the trunk. I also carry a two jacks to level the tear which would do the job.

Problem solved. I visited a local RV shop and purchased a spare tire carrier (about $35) that attaches to the tongue with two U-bolts. The device itself looks like a metal "T" and the spare is attached with two lug bolts. The nice thing about this carrier is that it gets the spare at about the same height of the tongue itself. I won't have any problems dragging the spare on the ground while towing. Luckily I built a long tongue, so I'll still be able to turn sharp without crunching the spare.
