Bending Angle Aluminium and piddlin'

Postby Geron » Sat Mar 19, 2005 8:07 pm

Waiting for my Windows to come in (Fantastic Fan/Vent arrived yesterday) so I've just been piddlin' and stuff.

Tried to bend my aluminium around the 6" radius on the door. First tried the uncut 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/16 - You can see the results in the background

Then I trimmed one side to 1/4" and it worked like a charm. That's not a kink in the bend that's the flash. I had annealed the angle heating it till the flame coming off the aluminium had a faint red glow to it. -- not the aluminium, the flame. It bent like butter. I'm going to increase the side to 3/8's and see if it will still bend. This is T5 aluminium angle from Home Depot.

Note the double screw clamp I built today. Like I needed more clamps!!

Oh well, 'bout bedtime. :SH :shhh:

If it's not broken, you're not trying hard enough.

AL trim

Postby David Beckett » Sat Mar 19, 2005 11:59 pm

Geron,

How did you cut the aluminum? From the picture it looks kind of rough.

Let me know how bending the 3/8 trim goes. I'll be ready in a few weeks to trim out my tear.

Cut it on my table saw. Because I was 'spearmentin' I did not "clean it up" after the cut therefore it IS rough. A pass or two with a file on on a wheel would clean it up nicely.

The speed I'm going you may finish you trim work before I get to the experiment with the 3/8 " angle :?

Finally got a round tuit

I used some 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/16 angle and cut one side to 3/8". It bent like soft butter. No problem with 3/8" on one side. I annealed the aluminum using the candle soot technique. You can also heat the aluminum till the falme COMING OFF the aluminum is faint orange color. Works out perfectly. The flame turns orange about the time all the soot is burned off.

Got all this info here. You guys are the greatest.

Thanks
