Pocket Hole Jig

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

I just love this tool
I'm just one of a handfull Kreg-Jig users in The Netherlands. This product is not availeble in Holland. A lot of my neighbours ask me to come over with the Kreg, but they have to use their own screws, because they are also not availeble overhere. Figuring out now, where to find the special screws.

Henk, Heikki (Classic Finn) might be able to help you with the screws. He was looking into becoming a dealer.

I'm beginning to think a kreg jig may be a handy gadget to have for future builds. Is there something special about the screws ?

Dave,

The screws have a flat washer head and an auger point. The pilot hole doesn't go through both pieces of wood to be joined. I've found a few manufacturers that make "pocket" screws. I got some from a local industrial supply house, the only difference was the Torx T20 drive instead of the #1 square drive. The screws were $00.08 each. For hardwood it takes a fine thread screw, for soft wood a coarse thread. The screw size is #7, but not all manufacturers and importers of screws use the same nomenclature in this country.

I have been known to use a deck or drywall screw with a small washer when I did not have the correct Kreg screw. If the washer is sized correctly it works just great. It isn't as pretty, but the beauty of a pocket hole is they are never seen after construction.

Not using Kreg Screws

Postby drcurran » Thu Jan 22, 2009 8:15 pm

I have had very poor results from trying to use "deck screws" with the Kreg system. I've found that Home Depot does not carry Kreg, but Lowes does. More expensive that "deck screws" but then again - "you get what you pay for" Just my .02

The washer makes all the difference in the world. Again, this is only for emergencies. 8)

Larwyn wrote:I guess I never had a good biscuit joiner. The one I have has always left me unimpressed, so it has seen little use. The un-scientific testing I did seemed to indicate that the biscuit did nothing to reinforce the joint, and the slot actually served to weaken it, a simple edge glued joint seemed superior. I will never wear it out because it sees limited use. I do still use dowels when pocket holes would spoil a piece. As I no longer own a mortiser, I'm not likely to use a mortise and tenon any time soon. So, for now at least, the pocket holes rule.

I could use a good router table too. The one have is a cheap Ryobi, it came with a router that I never remove, but the table and router both could be better.

Happy Thanksgiving All!

Actually there was an extensive test in one of my fine wood working magazines years ago. They did some subjective testing that showed the strength of the biscuits was quit impressive. In fact on thicker material where they used a double biscuit it was downright stunning. The biscuit swells once it is glued and they are very much stronger than a typical butt joint. A DeWalt or better will give you a good biscuit.

Sure, there are times when a pocket holer is what you are looking for (cabinet facings in particular, but biscuits can make a really strong joint. I can understand the frustration of using a cheap one; still, I’ve been very happy with the results I’ve got (not that a pocket holer isn’t on my will-buy list).

I'm trying to get by 'on the cheap' so didn't want to spend $99 for the Kreg kit. I got another brand that I thought was great (at first) because it was metal instead of blue plastic. But, the more I used it, the worse it got at making pocket holes. Not only that; but also, when I went back to get more of their screws, the stores didn't sell them! I finally went to Lowes and threw myself on the mercy of Pat, the local hardware specialist. He helped me pick out an inexpensive, single clamp on Kreg (I didn't know that existed!) plus the tool adaptor for my drill and the screws. So, I've got to say:

You all were right! Kreg is GOOD! :applause:

and.... THANKS! :D

I have 2 Kreg jigs. One is an inexpensive 2 hole blue plastic clamp on, and the other is an older aluminum jig with an adjustable clamp built in. The one pictured is not mine, but identical to it.

Image

I am told this is the original K2 jig by Kreg. I love the old K2, as it is fast for production. The blue one is great for ad hock hole drilling and 2x4 or long stock drilling. The new one is much more versatile, while the old one only does what it does (3/4" stock) but does it well.

I also have a biscuit joiner. I love it too! Biscuits are great when both sides need to be pretty, but I don't trust them on end grain to edge grain joints. Pocket screws excel at end grain to edge grain joints!

I really began to appreciate the biscuit joiner when I read an article in one of the various woodworking magazines that stated I should be using the table top, not the stock top, as my reference point. Once I started using the biscuit joiner correctly, I have found it very handy. Made this table for the side of my weekender with it. The redwood is 1" thick, the pine 3/4". Using the table as the reference, and building it upside down, and it came out great!

Note: I used tongue and groove redwood for the support piece. It didn't have to be as pretty. :D

I bought the Kreg after seeing people on this site use it. (Thanks again friends.) I bought the cheapie and a locking plier from HF. I found myself using it alot because I made a woodie and I wanted as few fasteners as possible seen when I was finished.
