Tow vehicles and loaded weight

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

The fiberglass shell weighs in at 700 lbs and I'm guessing that with it finished off and loaded that it will weigh in around 1200 lbs. but that is totally a guess. Right now I'm driving a '97 Intrepid but I would like to replace that before summer but haven't quite decided what to replace it with. I've kind of narrowed it down to 2 choices. I like the looks of the Aztec and think it would look cool paired up with our fiberglass shell but I'm having trouble finding any new ones and haven't found a good used one yet. My other choice would be the Saturn Vue. The salesman claims that it gets around 30 mpg, which would be a nice option with the price of gas here. It just jumped to 89.9/liter here today.

Check out Consumer Reports for any models you are considering before you commit. From personal experience I can say that Aztecs earned their black marks. Consider, there is reason they were discontinued. I have seen several Saturn Vue lemon law suits cross my desk this year. Not a lot, just more than expected from a Saturn product.

My 2 cents: Honda's (all models) still have the fewest complaints of the major manufacturers (by volume) while Chrysler Products still have the most.

Towing vehicle, trailer weight

Postby TRDRPIN » Fri Apr 01, 2005 5:05 pm

2002 Honda Odyssey, Camp-Inn Ultra 550, about 900 pounds, though not directly weighed.

Honda requires trannie and power steering coolers in order to tow and keep the warranty in force. I installed 12000GVW after market coolers behind the front bumper (pictures available if you need 'em). Over 4500 miles of towing in September, mostly on secondary roads, I averaged 20.9 MPG. I ALWAYS fill, top off and calculate mileage to a couple of decimal places, so that is REAL mileage, not a guess. I'm thrilled!

My fat trailer

Postby John Foote » Sat Apr 02, 2005 1:48 am

I'm building my tear for comfort, and cramming it full of toys and indulgences. I'm guessing 2400#, and growing. I'm hoping to tow this fat turkey with my `98 Toy Taco 4-banger 5-speed. Bullet-proof little truck, all paid for, tow-rated @ 3500#. If it turns out the trailer starts driving the truck, I'll go with a Tundra, and another darn bill to pay.

At the rate I'm going, I'll need a 2006 Peterbuilt, hendrickson rear end, but in reality, it's a 2000 Ford Ranger, 4liter, auto, 4wd off road package, 86K miles. I don't know the exact weight of the trailer so far, but I don't cut corners, and build for strength. I'm thinking 1200#, we'll see. Hopefully, I'll be going to Minden with it. The seats are incredibly uncomfortable now.....Doug Hodder

tow vehicle is a 2000 beetle turbo diesel with auto tranny. Only mod is larger injectors to give me 100 hp and 175ft lb of torque. My tear is a 2004 Camp Inn 550 Classic and it weighs around 1000-1100lb loaded. I've driven from CA to Mn and back with that rig with no trouble, and i plan on taking it to Minden, then MN again right after:)

Glad to see a couple other TDI owners out there, and I'm jealous of your passat mike!!!!

What kind of mileage do you get towing? We are wondering how much the TD will cost us in mileage. Not real worried, it can't do as bad as our F-250 4x4 Powerstroke (16mpg on a good day). Odie (my wife) gets 48-50 on the highway in her TDI (5 speed manual), for some reason I only get low to mid 40's when I drive it.

My Tears about 730lbs loaded. I pull it with a 2003 Dakota quad cab with a 4.7 V8..No problems.
