Cab Locks

Postby kartvines » Tue Mar 29, 2005 7:59 am

Maybe some one can help me out, I gotten my handles from Austin Hardware,[the shipping cost was too high, but over all I was able to save some money on the deal] and now considering where to buy my Hatch lock. Does any one know if the hatch lock and "cab" lock are the same things? they look the same from the photos.

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike,

If you're going to use a handle on the hatch like the ones on your side doors the latch used is almost the same except it doesn't have an inside handle and you can get the matching striker plate. Ron Johnson up in Auburn CA has some photos on his web site. He has a pic of the hatch latch on this page:

Cab Locks

Postby kartvines » Tue Mar 29, 2005 4:30 pm

Thanks you Danny. On a couple of sites, I have seen cab locks that look very much like photos of hatch/galley locks and only $3.95 plus shipping. I need to know if anyone else has tried them or if they look the same as other hatch locks. I have added a link:

http://www.austinhardware.com/product.a ... f%5Fid=920

Even with outrageous shipping cost I am able to get them cheaper than on teardrop trailer parts sites, and I am all in favor of saving a buck if the items is the same basic item, being I am restoring my teardrop on a tight budget.

I did not see the cost on the link you provided me.

Have you looked at this type:

or

http://www.austinhardware.com/product.asp?dept%5Fid=235&pf%5Fid=1142

They connect in the middle and on both sides. I am considering one of these for my Cubby galley.

cab locks

Kerry

To be honest, I never thought about it, the first one that you provided a link for is not available. I guess it would be a tighter lock, and being I have no hatch to restore, I may consider a change. I would have to see how it would connect with the inner locking points; I guess it would be a loop much like a tool box on a truck, how do you propose to install your points of locking contact?

Mike,

Don't be fooled by the message that you get on the website, just call them. Everytime that I have called, they could give me a price. Anyway, I plan to just drill a shallow hole a put a metal strike plate over the hole on each side and mostly the same for the center catch. Think of it as a garage door only it has a center fastener into the floor. They make them in a 'slam' version to I believe. That type just closes like almost anydoor, except that it would have 3 points to latch.

I don't think this is very clear, but if you look at the drawings on the website, you it may be clearer. I did not want the addition latches on the outside of the galley to keep it closed tightly.

Hope this helps
