Our Shadow is home!

Postby pgwilli » Sat Apr 09, 2005 12:13 pm

We picked up our Fat Shadow in Coeur d’Alene yesterday. :D

We spent the morning shopping while Phil got our Subaru set up to tow (brake controller, charging circuit). Phil then gave us a tour of the systems and we took off around 1:30.
The trip home took about six hours with a rest stop and diner break. I was really pleased with how well the Shadow handles behind our car. We got 20.1 mpg even though I was lead footing it a bit and driving into some pretty stiff head winds.
The only disappointment of the trip was when I tried to back into our driveway.
Thank goodness you can push these little trailers around by hand – looks like I’ll need to get some practice in a parking lot somewhere.
Anyway, registration on Monday and some outfitting. We’ll be taking it and our sea kayaks over to the San Juan Islands in May to look for orca.

Paul,
Congrats on getting your new trailer home!

(I need practice too backing up a trailer)

Sounds like you've got a nice trip planned!

Nice, Paul. I am happy for you. And, from a selfish point of view, Phil and SuZanne can now get mine going. I think, at the risk of bugging them, I am going to call and see whazup. I understand they make the HU-1 s after the 10 ft units.

Dare I say we would love a picture?

I was on duty at Ft. Lewis at one time, and made a number of trips over to the San Juans on my free time. A very neat place. I taught land navigation and survival and spent any number of mornings gazing at the islands out on Puget Sound (that's when it was clear enough).

Hey Tom,
Funny you should mention it, but SuZanne was telling us about this really cool custom galley that was on the way, with double lower cabinets...,

I'll try to figure out how to share photos after our May trip. We have a camp site overlooking Haro Strait. If the weather cooperates, we could get some great shots.

Hey PG congrats on your Shadow! :applause: I will give you a crash course on backing a trailer, if you put your steering hand on the 6 oclock position & keep it there , move your hand( wheel) to the right & the trailer will move to the right, move your hand to the left & the trailer will move to the left. Its the easiest way to back a trai;er I have found yet! Good Luck! :applause:

Congrats pgwilli on the new Hunter! Your sure to be a happy camper now. Those 15" tires do make these tears smooth to pull. Have they modified the design at all from previous years?

I just took ours out of its shed yesterday. Can't wait to get back our TearingUP the road!

Will be interested to hear what Phil and Suzannes 'custom galley' looks like. I've always thought this is what the Hunters needed. Let us know more if you find out anything.

Cheers

Thanks Dave.

I think they are staying pretty true to their original Kit roots. Our 'Fat' Shadow looks pretty close to your 'Long'. Just doesn't have the benifit of your beautiful galley upgrades and polish job.

I'm pretty sure SuZanne was describing San Diegan Tom's design to me.

The folks at Hunter seem content to build a solid basic Teardrop and let their customers take it from there. That, plus the potential evident from viewing your web site, is what convinced us that the Shadow was for us. We plan on living with the stock unit for a few trips and see what evolves.

Paul--

Congratulations on your new Fat Shadow! :applause: They are supposed to start on ours this week. We also are having some customization to the galley - two deep drawers (8" & 10" deep) under the utensil drawer a la CampADK. I am counting the days 'til we can drive up and get it.

Paul,

Great idea! We used ours for a full season before designing the galley upgrade. After a few outtings you'll figure out how you want to use it and the wheels will start a spinning! On the plus side you get to customize your tear rather than just having a stock trailer. With that extra foot in width you'll certainly have more to play with than us.

Cheers!

Two drawers? Hmm never thought of that one! It a neat mod considering this is not just a square area. Looking forward to seeing it complete!

Welcome to the wonderful world of teardrops and to the Hunter Shadow fraternity. Here's a picture of my HU-1 at North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene.
