Now that is an interesting concept, Rebecca.

Paul and I purchased the blue skies plans for the work top box camp table. We're hoping to make it in time for a Christmas gift for our son and his family. I'll let you know how it works out.

Its made of 1/4" laun and for all the corners I glued 1'2"X1" plywood strips (laun again) to give me some meat to glue & screw it together with.

The drop front is 1/4" laun both sides on a 1" strip border.

well, your kitchen counter at home is about 36" high, so it looks like the kitchen box is just the right height.

My dad made a wooden camp kitchen when I was a kid (40 years ago). We camped with the plywood kitchen for years. I have inherited it and have used it in the past when tent camping. I have transfered everything into our newly built td and will pass the camp kitchen on to my kids for their tent camping trips! It's amazing how homemade stuff works better and lasts a lot longer than store bought stuff!

Reading beyond the cartopper chuckbox, there are some incredible time slices in that Popular Science pdf. A few of them I noticed:

In the "new items" they tried for the first time a NEW plastic tape you can use on pipe joints, instead of plumbers putty. From Dupont, made of Teflon!

The new concept of a pop up tent trailer

The announcement of Coleman's new camp stove that runs on a disposable LP gas container!

Chevrolet ad announcing their NEW 409 CID motor

Amazing new pocket camera using 16mm film from Minox

Comparison report of the new Mustang and the Corvette.

Stanley Tools new line of power hand drills.

Good stuff, thanks for the link!

...Oh - And if you cross-breed the Chinchillas with the Sea Monkeys, you can make waterproof jackets out of 'em....

... and built a customized version of the Grubby 2, which I used for a long time. I had looked at building a modular Grub Box to fit in the galley of a TTT, but haven't found the right design balance yet.

My mom's uncle made a chuck box for her in about 1970. I recently talked her out of it and have used it for several Cub Scout campouts.

The construction is plenty sturdy, but very light compared to most that I've seen. The outside case and vertical divider are 3/8" plywood. The shelves are 1/4" ply dado'd into the 3/4". Small cleats are used at the corners.

Since I have the Chalet trailer, do tent camping with the scouts, and am planning a Teardrop I'm considering building a set of smaller chuck boxes that would be portable between the Teardrop, car, or Chalet depending on which style of camping we plan. They would be about 12" deep, 15" wide, and 15" tall.

By using cleats or epoxy fillets at all joints, I'm leaning toward using 4 mm Okume for these boxes. I have 5 sheets of the stuff in the garage and it is amazingly tough wood for being so thin and light. My daughter and I built a school project box out of 1/8" Luan door skin and it is quite solid. It has 3/4" cleats at all edges and the plywood doesn't need to be very stiff.

I had all the parts for a chuck-box cut and test fit back in 1974.
then along a tornado never did find the chuck-box parts for that matter we never found the garage they were in

never took the time to build another.
