Hatches and hinges - Show me yours please.

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

My hinges look a little goofy with the radius and battens, but I didnt have a better idea. BTW...this is year two with the auto clear coat over epoxy...

Image

The hinge and battens act like a dam so relief cuts were added to let water drain, the hinge was glued in with 5200

Image

The edge gap is pretty tight.

Image

At first I used only the bottom gasket, but added the top for a tighter seal. Draw tight latches really seal it good....to the point the top gasket is deforming.

That looks great Dave, I would say the deformation of the top gasket is perfect, as it shows it cannot go anywhere but elsewhere.... and no water gets in.

My trailer may be stored indoors at the new house once we make it there when this one is sold etc, but chances ate that it will live outdoors, so a good seal is imperative.

Guess i am now kinda committed to getting onto making the galley hatch, and fitting the hardwood battens/ribs.

Tonight ended like this.

To me this is one of the most helpfull picture threads yet, as I had no idea which way to go for starters.

The majority of what I am doing on my build is stolen ideas, and a pics looked at on various build threads.

These forums are the most amazing place to learn form one another.

Oh, and did I mention Spambots suck ?? 8)

I just wanted to say thank you for this thread!!

I have a T@B Clamshell which has had a leaking hatch from day 1. It went to the dealer under warranty umpteen times, had a new factory hatch put on and two different hinges put on and it still leaked a little bit. After seeing the pictures of Auntie M's rubber cover over her hatch, I hoped I had a solution!!

I didn't do the fix myself, took it to my dealer, but it turned out beautifully and doesn't leak anymore!!!!!!

rubber hatch hinge cover

Postby danlott » Sat May 15, 2010 11:25 pm

Carol,

I really like how your rubber hatch hinge cover was installed. I would like to see a better picture of the top edge and how the rubber is covered.

A picture from this angle:

I have never really liked any of the rubber covered hinge installations that I have seen on this forum, but yours looks very professional and neat.

Thought I would copy a pic of Gregp136's hatch onto here as well.
It also shows a beautifull galley.

Great thread!

Do any folks use regular door type hinges? They're inexpensive and the screws are located well away from the edges of the wood into which they're driven. You could then seal it like a piano hinge. Seems like a simple, cheap, sturdy method that can be water proofed well.

Thanks,
John

Guess it is all do-able, but the various full length hinges ten to be habit.

I never considered it myself.

Have a caravan window hinge of 5 foot that cost me £10, including some other bits.

doug hodder wrote:I like the older type "hurricane hinge". It has a 1/4" off set between the body and the hatch. The plus for me is that I can bury the hinge body flange under the skin and have no fasteners visible....but then the top has some serious epoxy over it. I allowed a small rain gutter just ahead of the knuckle on the hinge. I used a 3/8" lip on the interior skin of the galley that keeps water from wanting to "flow" in. The weather stripping rides on top of the lip. Doug
