A Canadian hunter whose close encounter with a black bear was caught on video and went viral this week now says he went back to the area and killed the bear, to keep it from attacking anyone else.

Richard Wesley knows he's lucky to have survived the brief encounter when, armed with a wooden bow, he appears to have startled a black bear while hunting in northern Ontario.

Wesley landed a punch, dropped his camera, and was able to get away a bit shaken but unhurt.

"You're scared and you're so happy to be alive at the same time," Wesley said.

In an interview with TMZ on Friday, May 26, Wesley said he returned to the site and killed the bear from a treestand, about 14 feet above the ground.

He said his family, including his wife and some younger relatives, pick berries in that area and his father urged him to harvest the bear before it attacked someone else.

If this is about the guy in the video, thanks for the closure.

Bear portable electric Fences
found this on a different forum
http://outdoorbasecamp.com

A big problem, particularly in the Shoshone, Teton and Bridger forests is the griz have started to identify a rifle shot with food. Shoot an elk in that area and the griz come running. It is highly recommended now to hunt in pairs so if a hunter bags an animal, his partner can stand guard while he dresses it. Many hunters and some backpackers are now carrying portable electric fences to put up around their kill and also around their camps.

this might help as long as you remember it is there, and to turn it back on when you leave or come back in.

below site offers more then just fencing.

Why not take this "aversion" thing to another level? If stranded alone, in the deep woods, in bear country, saturate your outerwear with bear spray, so you won't be bothered by the pesky critters...or bugs...or humans....

Saw a bear while on the road. Got two answers to the age old question of where a wild bear poops. 1. In the woods on the side of the road, and 2. in the middle of the road thru the woods.

Don't know what you decided to pack Captain, but be extra cautious. I've been reading of what seems an extraordinary number of bear encounters in Alaska this year. :o Fred
