Did I get myself into trouble?

Postby bosleybeebop » Tue Oct 25, 2016 12:58 pm

I poly'd my subfloor (anticipating having to set it on the rain before I was able to finish my build). Now that I have the walls/roof up I am wanting to put down either a hardwood/vinyl tile and I'm starting to think about adhesion. Ideally, I would use woodglue fastened on the studs for a hardwood floor. Knowing, glue first then poly...do I try and sand the poly finish off? I believe some of the new vinyl products use a sort of butyl/foam backer with adhesive.

Open to flooring suggesting and adhesives. I need to overcome some bolt heads as well that are not flush fit (had to leave them proud bcuz of ply/foam/ply sandwich)

You could try a carriage bolt instead.

I would test out a peal and stick flooring solution... a lot of those are made to go over slick floors (existing linoleum etc). If you need to glue something, you can always sand off the poly, but it might suck... :?

To replace bolt heads sticking up, you could try "elevator bolts"... Might even counter sink it a bit with "spade bit" if it compresses floor (foam) to much before becoming flush...

Might look at local sources first for the bolts...
Here is one source, but with internet access got to be 100 places to find what works best...

To break the sheen of the poly and increase adhesion, scuff with sand paper, once it is a bit scuffed adhesion increases...

Great info! How do you tighten a carriage/elevator bolt when tightening into something a soft as 1/4" ply?

Prong washers. I assume that you've got something else between your plywood and your frame like 3/4" of pine or something?

Try ACE hardware.

I covered my floor with a coat of exterior gloss paint, and a wall to wall mattress. Bolt heads, shoddy paint job? No problem, it's all hidden.
I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.
