2-burner drop-in gas cooktop stove, which model is best?

Postby OP827 » Sun Nov 13, 2016 5:23 pm

Hi everyone,
I have decided to forgo the "vintage" donor tent trailer cooktop gas stove I already have and go shopping for a brand new cooktop in my build, so I am looking at what is available in North America and specifically in Canada.

Please show off your drop-in cooktop stoves here and share your experience, which one was the best!
Any related advice is much appreciated. I also decided to not use portable stove inside trailer on the cooktop since such propane stove models take more space and do not look that nice.

Thanks!

Thanks, that looks like a good stove and is pretty much resembling Atwood's 2-burner stove I saw before.
That is a good candidate if it can be shipped to Canada, thanks again.
I like your teardrop, very nice build!

I used a Suburban brand 2 burner for about a year. Worked fine. Sipped fuel ("it has wind wings"). Then I had an opportunity to switch to a Dometic for a very reasonable fee. In comparison the Dometic has a very low simmer if you need that – much lower than the Suburban. On both stoves the cooking support thingy the pots and pans rest on come off easily on both models for cleaning. Knobs were larger on the Suburban (does not matter to me) and the Dometic has a Piezo ignitor (butane lighter works just as well – so this is not a deciding factor). My Dometic has a glass top which I believe you can get on brands. This increases work surface on the galley counter when not cooking (in my opinion). It’s a glass top so I am careful not to use a hammer on it.

The Suburban produced 13,000 BTUs an hour with both burners at maximum output. I assume the Dometic uses about the same. That helped me calculate fuel consumption based on cooking times for my typical meals

There are about 21,500 BTUs in a pound of propane. Simmer uses way less fuel. Both stoves seemed to get really good fuel life ( I have a 10 pound propane tank). Dividing the 21,500 by the heat per hour output 13,000 and multiplying it by the 10 pound propane tank - I should be able to get about 16 hours cook time with both burners at full output. In reality I easily get double that time. Full heat output would scorch my meals.

No matter what you decide on - consider wind and how you will block it. I have a backpackers folding wind screen I can deploy to protect the burners from the wind (if I need to). I have only had to use it once in 22 mph winds and it was handy! There are many types available.

Good luck on your choice there are many other solutions too!

Thanks Cosmo for useful info, appreciate that. Is it possible to buy glass top Dometic yoiu mentioned shipped to Canada? Are you building/manufacturing teardrops with those glass top stoves?
Thanks!

There was no functional need. When I visited Vistabule in October they convinced me it would provide more counter space and allow a new configuration of drawers and cabinet to work betters. I could have 3 people working in the galley at once. Two sous chefs in heels and leggings and one master chef swilling mead at the stove.

The slide out stove worked fine too. but only allowed 2 chefs to work at once. I have made dinner (and breakfast) for 4 several times and 6 on one occasion. 4 is not a problem 6 is pushing it. I typically tell friends where I am vacationing and when drop in's show up the party seems to center around the trailer. I though because of the friendly open design but maybe free food and drink has something to do with it.

We removed a Suburban 2 burner from an older RV, so cost was $0. It looks and works great, far better than our old coleman camp stove. With our pull-out galley, we made aluminum side panels to block the wind. The panels slide onto the cabinet structure that holds the stove top and can be mounted in any direction to act as a wind block. You can often find these stove tops in junk RV and can pick one up for probably around $10.

Thanks Dave! Suburban 2 burner looks good and with similar dimensions with 2 burner atwood stove. I am actually much impressed of your build kitchen design ideas! Maybe I should add a cool slideout kitchen in my build to cook outside...

Dave, forgot to ask, does the Suburban 2 burner has anti-rattle grates that are (spring?) fixed to the cooktop to prevent them from falling out during transport mode? I cannot see that in pictures and could not see that mentioned in the product description. Thanks.

OP, yes on the Suburban, the raise things lock into the range top and do not move. The "burn" and control of the suburban is just so much better than our Coleman propane stove, or any portable camp stove we ever had for that matter.

On the galley ideas, thanks for the compliments. In reality, Conch Fritter was designed to originally have the galley in the front and slide out the side. We then realized that all of the space under the bed would essentially be wasted doing it that way. The bed was always going to be on a raised platform, we just raised it a couple inches up from the original idea and got the pull out galley. With this design, the galley weight is more centralized over the axle, with the original it would have all been in the front where we now have cabinets, shelves and a dorm fridge that runs off of the inverter when driving or when boondocking.

We have a three burner SS Suburban with the cover which has wings that fold out. The Galley is 6' wide.
